Religious pharmacist denies customer pill

Wednesday 10 March 2010

A Lloyd’s pharmacist refused to serve the contraceptive pill over the counter to a customer because it conflicted with her religious beliefs.

Shocked customer, 38-year-old Janine Deeley thought the pharmacist was joking when she was told to try another chemist despite having a prescription from the doctor for the drug.

But she soon realised it was no joke.

Mother-of-two Janine, who needs the pill for painful periods, said she ‘couldn’t believe the arrogance’ of the pharmacist.

She emphasised her belief that women should be able to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies: ‘One of my daughters is 18, she might want to go on the pill and she has got the right, I’d rather have that than an unwanted pregnancy.’

Lloyd’s pharmacy has since said that they are launching an investigation into the inconvenience and have apologised for the distress caused.

Do you think the pharmacist was right to put her religion before her job?

RE: Religious pharmacist denies customer pill

No she was not right at all!! just because it was her religion and beliefs does not mean she can determine whether other women can take the pill or not. it had nothing to do with her she should have just done her job and kept her religios views to herself.

If she wants to work in the line of work, she needs to respect customers who need or want that sort of prescription. Everyone has views and beleifs but she should keep them to herself.

RE: Religious pharmacist denies customer pill

Not right at all- i once got a taxi to work
(I was working in a bar at the time)
and the Asian taxi driver spent the whole journey telling me how it was wrong to serve alchol and that I should be ashamed of where i worked and what I did! Even though HE was a taxi driver who mainly picked up drunks every night and takes them to other bars!
Plus the whole time he was doing this he was staring at my legs fucking perve!
This country has become too soft!

RE: Religious pharmacist denies customer pill

If this is her stance on the pill, is she happy enought to dispense medication for women going through IVF treatment?
She is clearly in the wrong profession.

RE: Religious pharmacist denies customer pill

This woman was 38yrs old and needed it for medical reasons so religious beliefs should not have got in the way. However saying that I also believe that the pill should not be given to kids as young as 12 or 16 because they can't control there urges. Nowadays hardly anybody is a virgin before they get married and it's more of a competition between groups of friends on who can have sex first! Disgusting! People need to be old enough before they start to get royally drunk or to take there clothes off! End of!

RE: Religious pharmacist denies customer pill

I got pregnant a couple of years ago, and happily my partner and I went to the doctor to get the ball rolling and find out what we needed to do. My doctor is of another religion, i wont mention which, but because my partner and i arent married, he said to me ' oh ill book you in for an abortion then' disgusting. If people are able to let their religious beliefs get in the way of their job then they should leave and work in a different industry. Hope she was sacked - but then again i doubt as she would have said ' cant fire me due to my religious beliefs'........looks like the minorities get the best of both worlds! And no, before my comment kicks up a fuss im not racist at all, just wish that religions and cultures werent the cause for argument and we can all live in harmony.

RE: Religious pharmacist denies customer pill

I do not think it was right for the pharmacist to judge. She presumed the woman wanted the pill for contraception but this was not the case. I was put on the pill at 14, by my doctors recommendations, as I too suffered excruciating period pains.

However, even if the woman was using it for contraception, I don't think the pharmacist has a right to refuse it. I don't believe we should condemn the pharmacist for her religious beliefs, however you should not go into a job that affects your moral or religious beliefs
