Anger at school toilets cameras

Wednesday 10 March 2010

A school in Birmingham has taken the ‘you can run but can’t hide’ approach towards their students and installed cameras in the toilets without permission from parents.

Parents are furious over the invasion of privacy and want to know why the school is taking such extreme actions.

The Grace Academy School claims the cameras will protect the pupils and ensure they feel safe whenever they are using the facilities.

However, many of the pupils are refusing to use the toilets, because they don’t want to be filmed.

Meanwhile, parents fear that the footage may end up in the wrong hands.

Despite the school’s attempts to reassure parents by saying the cameras only overlook the door and sinks, unhappiness with the decision remains.

What do you think about the Big Brother approach schools are taking to ensure students’ safety?

For goness sake, its not like the cameras are in the cubicals. Take a walk round London, you get filmed everywhere there!!!

Get a grip you sad people, making a big deal out of nothing. When I was at school there was camera's all over the place and nobody cared!!
Who would want to see camera footage of your children washing their hands or skiving class...cos thats all they will be able to see.
People take things too far these days, I don't think the school should need to ask permission to keep people safe or stop people vandalising their facilities

RE: Anger at school toilets cameras

i completely agree everywhere you go nowadays there is cctv watching you what difference does it make if a camera sees children washing their hands! it could help prevent a lot of things which make the children's lives far more uncomfortable such as bullying, smoking and vandalising i think its a good idea.

altho i have just thought of something what about the boys toilets surely they haven't put them there where the urinals are?? if they have then it is a bit iffy and i spose some people would argue that its sexist to have them in the girls toilets but not the boys??

RE: Anger at school toilets cameras

I think this is a good thing to be honest...
I know of people when i was at school that got beaten up in the toilets, i think it is right that they are being watched as the toilet is the only place you could go with out being watched.

Also it will stop kids from doing drugs or smoking as they will be watched and the camera will deteched smoke and also if a child acts strange when they come out of the toilet.

It is for the childs personal protection. The mums are just finding something to have a moan about as per usual. But it is the mums that dont have a job and are trying to claim!

RE: Anger at school toilets cameras

I think its a great idea as they only overlook the sinks and you can't see in the cubicles.

When I was at school so much went on in the toilets I avoided them and ended up holding in the toilet the full day as I would avoid them like the plague.

The "hard" girls would always be 'dogging' class in there and harass you or make fun of you. Also the toilets were so smelly and full of smoke from girls smoking I actually got accused once of smoking from my teacher. I must have been in the toilet for 20 - 30 seconds at the most but ended up smelling for the full day.

The cameras could stop girls smoking and bullying. Also could stop dogging class. Only a good thing.

I think they should also bring cameras into the school buses as well as well as the toilets, the school bus also was a huge problem when I was at school!!!

RE: Anger at school toilets cameras

well to be quite honest, none of you know what its actually like.
i went to this school!
and i wouldnt mind if you could only see the sinks, but you cant.
yeah, the school say the camera's cant see into the cubicals.
BUT if a pupil looks at the camera, they can see the reflection on the inside of a cubical.
therefore, you can see people inside the cubical!
