Courtnay Johnston was just 14 when she discovered she was expecting a baby with boyfriend Danny McBean.
But just as she was coming to terms with being an underage mum, Danny died in an horrific car accident aged just 16.
Now their three-month old daughter, Amelia Danni, is helping Courtnay to cope with her shattering grief.
Courtnay, now 15, who lives in Inverness with her parents Sam, 39, and Gavin, 46, and her brother Alex, started dating Danny in February 2009. They went to the same secondary school, but had known each other since they were six.
'Danny gave me a huge hug before he left'
'I’d fancied him for ages, so when he finally asked me out I was thrilled. We decided to start sleeping together after several months,' she says.
But Courtnay admits they didn’t always use contraception and in August 2009 Sam suspected her daughter might be pregnant.
Courtnay recalls: 'I hadn’t been feeling well for a few weeks so Mum bought me a test and as soon as I saw it was positive I told Danny. We were both so shocked and had no idea how we’d cope with a baby.'
Mum Sam tells Closer: 'I felt numb when I found out, but I told her I’d support her decision to go ahead with the pregnancy if that’s what she wanted.'
Courtnay says: 'Danny and I agreed that with my parents’ help we could do it.'
Just three weeks later, Sam collected Courtnay from a friend’s house 13 miles away while Danny, who lived with his grandparents, got a lift home with friends.
'Danny gave me a huge hug before he left,' recalls Courtnay, who was seven weeks pregnant at the time.
But as Sam drove home, they came across a car accident.
'I saw police and fire engines and a car at the side of the road. I had that awful sick feeling that it was my friend’s car,' says Courtnay. The police confirmed it was and while the driver and two other passengers survived, Danny died at the scene.
Understandably, Courtnay, who was then three months pregnant, found it too difficult to cope at school after the funeral, so she started home tutoring. 'It was hard being at school – everything reminded me of Danny,' she says. 'But feeling our daughter kicking inside me gave me hope.'
In May this year, after 12 hours in labour, Courtnay gave birth.
'If I didn’t have my baby I don’t know how I’d have coped'
'Before he died, Danny said he liked the name Amelia, so I called her Amelia Danni,' she explains.
Courtnay admits being a young mum isn’t easy, but luckily Sam’s been able to take time off work to help her. Now Courtnay admits that she couldn’t cope without Amelia Danni.
'I still get down, but I’m starting to have brighter days,' she says. 'If I didn’t have my baby I don’t know how I’d have coped.'
