The feisty popstar said about returning to the studio: ‘At first it was really, really difficult because I was pregnant when I was making it, with my second baby, and for a long time I felt it was really hard to connect with myself.’

Lily went on: ‘It wasn’t until I stopped breastfeeding that I started to connect with myself again so it was much harder than it has been in the past.’

The singer took a break from her impressive pop career to have a family, welcoming daughters Ethel , aged 2, and Marnie Rose, aged 10 months.

Lily marked her return to music with a cover of Keane’s ‘somewhere only we know’ used in the John Lewis Christmas advert. She followed this up with her new single ‘hard out here’ promoted by a controversial music video.

The video pokes fun at other popstars who wear skimpy outfits onstage as well as male singers that refer to women in a derogatory manner such as ‘blurred lines’ singer Robin Thicke.

‘My video has nothing to do with Miley, someone else has come up with that themselves, it was never intentional. Robin Thicke, however, was.’

Lily spilled details on her forthcoming comeback album, suggesting that she has drawn on her experiences throughout her music hiatus to inspire her songwriting.

‘There are songs about love, songs about heartbreak and songs about things that have been deep and profound which have affected me in great ways and not so great ways.’

When the mum of two was asked if she would be against her offspring following her into the world of showbiz, she openly said: ‘No, I’d support them- it’d be hypocritical for me not to.’
