When the owner of the stolen wallet received a call that it was waiting for them at a nearby police station, they had no idea what they were about to find inside it.

Scrawled in red pen, there was a painfully honest apology note tucked inside it - and it might just be one of the most heartbreaking things we've ever read.

It read: "I would like to apologise regarding picking up this wallet. I am addicted to crystal meth and it was my first reaction upon seeing it.

"The bank cards were not played around with nor would I sell your profile (IDs and such).

"Once again I'm sorry and I hope this gets back to you swiftly as it was the only way I thought to get it back to you.

"Please never do meth. I'm sorry."

We admire the thief's honesty - and we are happy that, unlike so many others, he took such pains to return the property to its rightful owner and right his wrongs.

We hope he finds the help he needs to beat his addiction. And we especially hope this message will serve as a warning to anyone tempted to try drugs. It really doesn't pay.
