Obviously you want the best rate when it comes to exchanging your cash, so here are some things to think about when buying travel money.

Do pay for currency with a debit card

Most credit card company’s class buying foreign currency as a cash withdrawal, which means you will be charged and may have to pay interest.

Don’t buy currency at the airport

Everyone’s been there: you get to the airport and you have the horrible realisation you don’t have any euros/dollars etc. But if you buy from the airport, you’ll end up paying extortionate rates. Plan ahead!

Do order currency online in advance

For the best possible rate you should order your currency online in advance. Even places like the Post Office offer better exchange rates online than if you go into store.

Don’t withdraw currency from your credit card abroad

Try to avoid this where possible and use your debit card if you need a top up. If you withdraw from your credit card, you’ll have to pay a Foreign Currency Charge, a withdrawal charge and possibly interest.
