The young woman was shot and shoved out of the moving pickup truck about a block down the road from a local mosque.

Minister Basil Abdullah, who was outside doing chores at the time, heard the gunfire and then saw the young woman running his way screaming for help.

Speaking with KHOU.com, he recalled what the victim said: “Oh God, please help me. I don’t want to die."

The bleeding woman collapsed into a roadside ditch, where Abdullah rushed to her side to try and tend to her wounds.

“I was just holding her putting tension onto her side."

It was at that moment that he noticed the victim was pregnant by about six months, according to police.

She kept saying: “I don’t want my baby to die. Help me, help me.”

Holding her hand tightly to reassure her, he quickly dialled the police, sitting with her until emergency services arrived.

The pregnant woman was rushed to Ben Taub Hospital - and, at the time of transport, both she and her unborn baby were still alive.

Police are still looking for the gunman and a motive.
