Joan Rivers' personal doctor took a selfie while the comedian was under anesthesia and the physician was set to perform an unauthorised biopsy, a report has claimed.

According to CNN, the picture was snapped in the procedure room right before the physician was about to perform an unauthorised biopsy on Rivers' vocal chords, which had lead to her cardiac arrest.

A member of staff at the clinic has informed investigators, CNN added.

It has also been reported that Dr. Lawrence Cohen had finished his work on the star shortly before her unidentified personal physician allegedly performed the biopsy.

Just before performing the biopsy, the unnamed physician is said to have taken his camera out to have a picture with unconscious Joan.

During the subsequent procedure, Joan suddenly went into cardiac arrest.

Investigators have said that they believe this was due to her vocal chords swelling, thereby cutting off oxygen to her lungs.

The news comes following reports that the clinic's medical director Dr. Lawrence Cohen has been fired.

ABC News tweeted the news writing: "Medical director of Yorkville Endoscopy where #JoanRivers went into cardiac arrest is out.

"He is no longer performing procedures at the clinic."

A rep from the clinic has since confirmed that the doctor has stepped down from his position as medical director, although reports have said that he has not been directly blamed for Joan's death.
