Katie Hopkins, 39, often raises eyebrows due to her comments on the obesity epidemic (and children's names), but the former Apprentice star left many Twitter users seething when she turned her attention to those suffering from depression.

KATIE HOPKINS: 'I'M SCARED I WON'T LOSE MY WEIGHT'

She wrote: "Doctors need to spend less time signing sick notes and more time dispensing some strong words of advice. Such as 'get a bloody grip'."

Katie followed up her comment with a personal anecdote, writing: "Once I was given a sick note and a prescription for anti-depressants.

"I threw the note in the bin, ripped up the script & went back to work."

One user responded angrily: "Your point? Do you think that makes you a stronger/better/healthier person in any way? Because I don't."

Another snapped: "What a pointless, bigoted, comment. Medal??"

One Twitter user even shockingly said that Katie should have "just jumped off Beachy Head".

KATIE HOPKINS: 'I HATE FAT PEOPLE FOR MAKING ME DO THIS'

Katie's controversial comments were, however, seemingly directed at - or at least inspired by - one person in particular.

Joyce Thacker, one of the leading figures facing calls to quit over the Rotherham child molestation scandal, is now off work on sick leave.

The head of children’s services has been off work at Rotherham Borough Council since Monday, a spokesman for the authority confirmed today.

He said the reason for her sick leave is ‘between her and her doctor’ and added it is not yet known when she will return to work.

Ms Thacker, who is paid £130,000 per year, has faced repeated calls to quit following the publication of the Jay report, which revealed at least 1,400 children in the town had been sexually exploited between 1997 and 2013 and there had been ‘serious failings’ by the council and the police in protecting victims.

At a Home Affairs Select Committee hearing last week, she said she would not be standing down as she had worked ‘tirelessly’ to tackle the issue in Rotherham.

A scornful Katie Hopkins responded to the news on Twitter, writing: "Sick leave? Typical. Joyce Thacker needs to take accountability, not paid sick leave. Why do doctors do this?"

Her comments had a mixed reaction from followers, some of whom agreed with Katie, and some of whom believed it is not fair to judge until more information about the nature of Mrs Thacker's illness is made available.
