Scots-born Andy Murray took to Facebook to share his views on the upcoming independence referendum, telling followers: “Huge day for Scotland today! no campaign negativity last few days totally swayed my view on it. excited to see the outcome. lets do this! (sic).”

Though the 27-year-old did not directly say what side he was voting for, many took his comments to be a revelation that he was voting ‘yes’ for an independent Scotland.

A twitter troll hit back at the former Wimbledon champion, shockingly tweeting that he wish he had ‘been killed at Dunblane’.

Andy was a survivor of the tragic Dunblane school massacre in March 1996. Sixteen school children (all ages 5 and 6) along with their teacher were killed when gunman Thomas Hamilton opened fire during a PE lesson.

8-year-old Andy was sheltered in a nearby classroom as the horrific massacre unfolded.

The shocking tweets were later followed up with another message from the online troll, which read: “You fing c*. All the support you got at Wimbledon from British people, and then you turn around & spew this shit. F*** YOU.”

Andy has yet to respond to the tweets, but his fans and followers have rallied around him in support.

One wrote: “Please ignore idiots… We appreciate you as a sportsman, as a Scot and as a person of integrity.”

Another referred to the troll as a ‘rotten, sick individual’.

Sportsman Andy has rarely discussed his memories from the tragedy at his primary school, but during a BBC interview in June last year when recalling the day of the shootings.
