The baby boy was dumped just 24 hours after being born, and authorities believe he could have been down there for up to five days before being discovered.

Police rescued the boy after passing cyclists discovered him on Sunday morning, after hearing his cries.

The baby was found in a drain in Sydney

It took several people to lift a heavy concrete slab to free the child, who was malnourished and dehydrated after his ordeal.

He had fallen 2.5 metres down the drain when he was dumped, but luckily did not sustain more serious injuries.

Police doubt that the child would have survived much longer, given that temperatures in the area of Australia reached 40C.

The mother was tracked down after checking hospital records and knocking on doors in the area.

She has been denied bail and is due in court on Friday.

‘The umbilical cord has been cut and had been clamped so there appears to have been some sort of medical intervention since his birth, said local police inspector David Lagats.
