Richard Bowler, who suffers from cerebral palsy, was convicted of manslaughter by gross negligence, after Chef Alun Williams, 47, died from a heart attacked after he was wrapped in clingfilm and PVC during a sex game.

Bowler’s co-defendant, David Connor – who acts as his carer – was found not guilty of the same charge.

Today, Canterbury Crown Court heard how Williams – who had a sexual interest in bondage – arrived at the flat of Bowler and Connor, in Dover, after arranging to meet for sex in August.

Connor is reported to have told police that he left the house when Bowler told him he had a man coming round for sex.

But when he returned later that day Bowler told him Williams wanted to be wrapped in clingfilm.

Five hours later, Bowler dialled 999 and said Williams had stopped breathing. He performed CPR but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Williams was wrapped from head to toe in clingfilm and PVC sheeting, with just breathing holes around his nose and mouth.

A post-mortem found Williams died following body wrapping while under the influence of drugs.

Although both denied the charges, after four hours of deliberation, Bowler was convicted and Connor cleared.

Speaking after the sentencing, Detective Inspector Richard Vickery, from Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate said: “Tis a tragic death of a man well-liked by his colleagues and friends.

“Bowler had a responsibility to look after the welfare of Mr Williams when he entered their home and spent the evening with him. Due to the nature in which he was restrained he should never have left him alone for extended periods of time - but he did.

“I'm pleased the courts have recognised this responsibility and found him guilty of manslaughter. I hope this verdict and sentence goes some way to providing those who were close to Mr Williams some closure after what has been a very difficult time.”
