Film producer Stephen fears his reputation is being damaged after reports emerged that the couple had a series of fiery bust-ups in early December.
And he is reportedly pleading with the former Spice Girl to defend him, after speculation that he hit her continues to circulate.
However, a source told The Sun: ‘Stephen and Mel had a series of bust-ups but there was absolutely no physical violence.
‘Stephen is very concerned that his reputation could be severely damaged.’
Mel and Stephen married in 2007 and have one daughter together, three-year-old Madison. However Stephen was forced to flee the U.K last week over reports (which he has denied) that he was abusive towards his wife of seven years.
Speaking from California on Thursday, the producer said: ‘It doesn’t matter if people think I’m a good guy or a bad guy. Everything is subjective.’
