The earthquake caused buildings to shake in Leicestershire, Rutland and Lincolnshire after it began just after 10.25pm.

Residents took to Twitter to tell of their shock after realising an earthquake had struck.

One frightened user wrote: "How was there an earthquake in England? It's the end of the world."

Another added: "Everyone in my Facebook felt and heard it too! Earthquake."

Still one more simply screamed into cyberspace: "Earthquake!!!!"

However some were quick to poke fun at the situation too.

Michael Pattinson, posting a photo of a fallen deckchair, insisted that: "We will rebuild" after the Nottingham tremors.

The magnitude 3.8 quake, according to the US Geological Survey, was recorded near Cottesmore in Rutland.

It comes shortly after a tremor with a magnitude of 2.9 was recorded in Hampshire on Tuesday.

Fingers crossed that's the last of them for now!
