When Vincent Butterfield’s friend was diagnosed with cancer - no one could believe it.

Not only was Zack Gossage only in the first grade, he also seemed like a happy, healthy little boy for most of his childhood.

But after feeling sick and tired for weeks, Zack was sent for tests, and the worst was discovered - he had leukaemia.

Despite the nature of his illness, Zack barely misses a day of school, all because he knows that it’s there he will see his friend Vincent, and get to play with him at break time.

Vincent meanwhile, began asking questions and learning about his friend’s cancer treatment - something which he discovered was very expensive.

Desperate to help, the enterprising little boy suggested that he and his parents sell scarves they made and give the money raised to Zack’s family.

Not content with raising a couple of hundred dollars to ease the family’s financial woes, Vincent also worried about how Zack felt about losing his hair.

So one day he turned up in class, whipped off his hat and revealed his newly shaven head.

‘I cut it off,’ he announced. ‘To make Zack feel like he’s not the only one without any hair.’
