During a drinking contest in the central French town of Clermont-Ferrand, Renaud Prudhomme broke the shots record at the bar buy doing a whopping 56 in one sitting.

Served by Giles Crepin, 47, the man downed the alcohol before being helped home by his daughter and friends.

Emergency services later had to be called as Prudhomme was so unwell, and the 56-year-old died the next day in hospital.

And despite being found guilty of Manslaughter, Mr Crepin’s lawyer maintains that his client has absolutely no responsibility for the death.

’It’s a decision guided by emotion and the unconscious desire to set an example.’

He added that the man had existing respiratory and alcohol abuse problems, and that it was the man’s daughter who had pushed him to complete the challenge.

‘We can’t ask every customer who buys alcohol to present their medical certificates’ the lawyer added.

Crepin has been banned from bartending for a year, and received a four month suspended jail sentence.
