How does dental hypnotherapy work?

Dental hypnotherapy is carried out differently for each individual. The dentist, in my case, Dr Richard Marques will encourage you into a trance-like state usually by talking to you - like meditating in a yoga session. It can take anything from a couple of seconds to a few minutes to get into this trance state. Hypnotherapy is used alongside with chemical anesthesia or as the sole anesthetic, and to help their patients overcome their fears and anxieties about dental treatments or dentophobia.

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis works through profound deep relaxation and limitation of voluntary muscles. The trance state may take a few moments or longer to achieve, depending on the subject. One of the most exciting things about the hypnotic state is the speed in which it can be produced.

Are there any side affects?

Yes, feeling more confident, more relaxed, compliant with the dentist and in control.

How much does it cost?

The approximate cost for dental treatment under hypnosis is £200 per hour. We offer a free consultation to discuss this treatment. Payment plans up to 36 months interest free are also offered.

How do we know whether a dentist has been properly trained to offer hypnotherapy?

You can find out if they have been trained at a reputable training school, although it is an unregulated body so it is in fact hard to find out. The most important thing is having a good rapport with your dentist, and a dentist that feels confident using hypnosis as part of their treatment. Dr Richard Marques is one of the finest dentists in his field and I have worked with him very successfully on numerous occasions.

How does hypnosis help patients with dentophobia?

It helps patients to receive dental treatment free from fear, lessen or stop the gag reflex and reduce bruxism (grinding of the teeth), as well as helping with the symptoms of dentophobia like migraines and sleeping problems. It enables patients that in many circumstances feel incapable of visiting their dentist due to fears and phobias or the thought that ongoing treatment may be traumatic.

How often should you have it?

Depends on the treatment or the issue that you are being treated for. As an example a dental issue like bruxism or dental analgesia, are different issues, therefore treatment time would be depending. And as always everything is dealt with individually. Both myself and Dr Richard Marques offer consultations to discuss each patient and each issue before hand.
