The BBC One dancing competition has teased the idea of introducing gender-neutral couples on the show – but Kara is among those who doesn't think it should happen.
Speaking to the Daily Star, Kara, 31, said: "I don't agree with the same-sex plan at all.
"You have a man because he is going to lead and you have a woman who will be lead."
The former EastEnders actress is at risk of causing offence to the LGBT community, but she insisted: "It's not to do with sexual orientation."
Kara won the 2010 series of Strictly, with professional dancer Artem Chigvintsev who she later went on to have a relationship with.
Her comments echo those of fellow dancer James Jordan who has insisted the same-sex move would be a bad one.
Speaking to The Sun last month, he said: "It's wrong. I think they would lose so many viewers.
"If [same-sex couples] want to, go and do their own competitions, but ballroom dancing is about a man dancing with a woman – that's fact."
