EastEnders viewers know Shabnam has had a tough year – after it was revealed a one night stand with Dean Wicks seven years ago resulted in her falling pregnant and giving birth to daughter Jade, who she later abandoned.

As she and partner Kush Kazemi prepare to marry, they are devastated when their chance to become parents together is taken from them.

Rakhee Thakrar, who plays Shabnam, told the Mirror: "All of us working on this story have been committed to telling it truthfully.

"It was a real collaborative process and everyone involved from the crew, production, research, Sands [neonatal death and stillbirth support group], writers and directors have all been extremely sensitive.

"The filming was inevitably emotional. However everyone involved was focused, sensitive and supportive of one another."

To ensure she played the tragic storyline true to real life, Rakhee met with women who have sadly experienced the loss of a baby.

She added: "The emotional generosity of these women was invaluable in playing Shabnam's story."

EastEnders will broadcast Shabnam and Kush's emotional scenes next month on BBC One.
