The philosophy of feng shui is based on the idea that our homes are a mirror of what's happening inside us. Aligning our personal energy with the energy in our environment creates harmony, which is good for us.

Create a more harmonious household this weekend with some of these easy-to-follow instructions.

Be aware of the air

Everyone knows the risks associated with outdoor air pollution, but few are aware that indoor air pollution can actually be much worse, unless you live in a truly green, environmentally friendly building.

The easiest way to take care of the air quality of your living space – while also greatly improving its feng shui energy – is with an air purifying plant. These include Boston Ferns, Money plants, Bamboo sticks, Peace Lilies and Orchids.

Avoid sharp leaved plants such as cactus as they send negative energy.

Feng shui your health areas

Feng shui practitioners believe every part of the home represents a different family member, aspect and part of the body. While your wellbeing will be affected by the overall energy of your home, there are two areas that will affect the state of your wellbeing most.

The first key wellbeing area is the center of your home and the second is the hall.

Both these areas of the home should be as clutter free as possible and uplifted with fresh flowers and a mirror. However, ensure that mirrors are not placed opposite the front door.

Be clutter-free

Often this feng shui step of clutter clearing is ignored in favour of flashier feng shui cures. The fact is that no amount of good feng shui colours, or plants will negate the low, depressing energy of clutter.

Clutter constantly drains energy from you, which is totally unnecessary as there are lots of easy, and quick ways to de-clutter. Websites like eBay, Ziffit.com and Gumtree have taken away any excuse not to tackle your clutter buildup.

Encourage a restful sleep

Many things are happening within your body when you sleep, from processing the events of the day, to your body healing itself. These processes make getting a good night’s rest imperative to your wellbeing.

Good feng shui in the bedroom will also impact the quality of your intimate relationship.

Here are a few steps you should routinely carry out to improve and maintain your bedroom:

    Check your mirrors

Mirrors are one of the most popular and powerful feng shui cures said to increase your wealth and your luck.

As an expression of the water element, mirrors can also have cooling and calming energies, and of course, the ability to expand a space and create more light.

Typical oval, round, or square mirrors are good. Avoid irregular shaped mirrors and small, tiled mirrors. Place a mirror on the southeast wall of your living room to boost your wealth.
Embrace all shapes and sizes

Curved shapes are often the first to be thought of when it comes to good feng shui, but including an overall mix of shapes will make your home feel most balanced. Squares and low, flat shapes represent earth. Tall, upright rectangles signify wood. Triangles smybolise the flames of a fire. Irregular, curvy shapes represent water, while domes and ovals signify metal.

    Trust your feelings

Finally, it’s not rocket science that our favourite items bring us the most joy. By placing a treasured item in a prominent spot, when you walk into the room it will bring you joy, while you, in turn, will send joy back into the space.
