Romance or showmance: Are these celebrity couples for real?

Couples like the Beckhams are an example of just how lucrative a celebrity romantic partnership can be.

David and Victoria are said to be worth more than £500million now – so it’s easy to see why other showbiz couples are desperate to emulate their success.

Mark Wright and Michelle Keegan are another couple who have managed to turn their relationship into a huge money maker. But how far will some people go to cash in?

It seems like this year alone has been huge for alleged faux romance – and shows like Celebrity Big Brother and I’m a Celebrity are breeding grounds for reality TV relationships.

Chloe-Jasmine Whichello and Stevi Ritchie

The former X Factor contestants shocked everyone easier this year by announcing they were engaged.

But then Chloe and Stevi shocked again by entering the Celebrity Big Brother house – as a couple.

During their time on the show, viewers constantly questioned the authenticity of their relationship. Twitter users insisted the oddball couple acted like they didn’t even know each other that well, despite him popping the question.

Others blasted their awkward and over-the-top PDA sessions, insisting that, if they were genuine, there would be no need to make such a show.

Either way, Chloe and Stevi did something right as they made it all the way to the final. They have, of course, since denied they are a showmance, but only time will tell.

Marnie Simpson and Ricky Rayment

Shortly after his relationship with Jessica Wright ended in December last year, Ricky Rayment found ‘love’ again with Geordie Shore star Marnie Simpson.

They met in January, at the National Television Awards, and quickly became inseparable.

Despite their consistent insistence that they were really in love, Marnie and Ricky were dogged by rumours of a showmance.

But, in an attempt to prove their critics wrong, they got tattoos for each other and Ricky even got down on one knee.

However, their relationship ended almost as quickly as it started. In September Ricky suggested Marnie had cheated on him with her ex, and she in turn claimed he’d called her slag and revealed that’s what he’d always thought of her.

Not exactly the best foundation to build a relationship on, is it?

Charlotte Crosby and Max Morley

Say what you like about Charlotte Crosby – you can’t deny she’s direct.

The Geordie Shore star, 26, recently went public with her relationship with Love Island winner Max Morley.

But Max’s ex, and fellow Love Island star, Jess Hayes has claimed that he is only using Charlotte to further his own career.

You’d forgive Charlotte for being a bit wary of Max’s intentions, if his ex-girlfriend had such negative things to say. But Charlotte responded with comments of the complete opposite nature.

She told Star magazine: “Even if that is his intention, I enjoy spending time with him, so I’ll happily help him.

“It will take us a while before we have a serious chat about what’s actually going to happen.”

An honest showmance: that’s definitely a new one.

Past ‘showmances’

Previous famous showmances include Ricci Guarnaccio and Lauren Goodger. The reality TV stars appeared on CBB in 2014, and Ricci was quick to insist he was smitten with the Essex girl.

But Lauren, 28, blew hot and cold and, follow their exit from the house, he slammed her.

He told Now magazine: “I felt like she led us up the garden path. I’m not delusional by any means at all. You can’t one minute be saying one thing and the next saying we’re just friends.”

In 2013, Joey Essex and Amy Willerton took part in I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here, and viewers thought they were seeing another Katie Price and Peter Andre in the making.

However, while Amy insisted their romance was real, Joey suggested it was a jungle fake.

He said: “We never had a relationship. We were never a couple – we just got along in the jungle. She lives three hours away from me and I’ve got so much work on, so we haven’t really got time to see each other.”

While it’s nice to watch genuine couples falling for each other on our favourite shows, the whole fake romance thing is getting a bit boring now – isn’t it?
