Police officers found J'zyra Thompson, aged 19 months, dead with severe burns by the oven at her home in northeast Houston, Texas.

According to local reports, J'zyra, described as a "sweet baby", and her siblings aged three to five were left in the care of their pregnant mother’s boyfriend when she went to work on Monday night.

The tots are believed to have begun playing with the oven during the night; emergency services were called shortly after midnight, but there was nothing they could do to save J’zyra.

"Upon their arrival they found a deceased 1-year-old," said HPD homicide detective Ronda Pemberton.

"We found the baby next to the oven. It appears to be accidental."

J’zyra’s grandmother, Gina Dennis, told KPRC-TV “we don’t know exactly what happened” in the home the night the toddler died.

"She was a sweet baby," she said tearfully. “This is unexplainable, so, I have no words.”

According to the Houston Chronicle consider, police have questioned and since released J’Zyra’s mother and her boyfriend.

However a judge has since ordered that the two other children involved in the incident, along another one of their siblings (aged 3, 3, and 5) be taken into custody and placed in foster homes.

Texas Child Protective Services spokeswoman Estella Olguin told the Daily News: “The big concern was that the children were often left home alone.

“You would never want to leave children this age home alone.”

A GoFundMe account has been set up to try and raise the cash needed for funeral costs.

The fundraising page describes how the tragic tot was "loved by everyone" and had a "never-ending smile".
