Pop a pill and make burgers and chips a healthy

Wednesday 09 January 2008

Israeli government scientists are developing a pill that will take away the unhealthiness of eating foods like burgers, pies, sausages and chips.

The idea behind the tablet is to prevent fat from getting into the bloodstream where it can clog arteries and lead to heart attacks and strokes.

The pill is made from a collection of chemicals called polyphenols, which are found in fruit, vegetables and red wine.

It is thought that these chemicals also contain the characteristics of antioxidants and will clean up the fats in different types of food.

Solution

Dr Joseph Kanner, from the government science laboratory in Tel Aviv, said, “The world is addicted to fatty food like burgers. So maybe the solution is to go with the flow and try to take the bad bits out of the meal.”

It is hoped that the pill will be taken just before the consumption of a fatty meal, to cancel out any ‘bad’ fats.

“It’s an interesting way of adapting to our modern eating habits and allowing us to indulge in something that would normally be bad for us,” adds Dr Kanner.
