Teenage drinking Campaign against underage drinking

Closer campaigns against underage drinking

Saturday 27 September 2008

Closer is launching a campaign today to halt the growing trend of underage boozing in the UK.

And after yesterday's announcement, we're not the only ones who want to reduce teen drinking.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith is introducing this Saturday a new incentive to stop under 18's from drinking on the streets... punish their mums and dads!

The idea is to target the parents by fining them up to £1000, and even sentencing them to community service.

A government source said: "They should have handle on what their children are doing. If they have kids who are persistently breaking the law, then the law should be applied to the parents."

The facts behind teen binge drinking

And Closer are campaigning too to STOP this growing trend of drunken teenagers walking the streets.

Almost half of kids start binge drinking before they turn 13, says a shocking survey by charity Crime Concern.

The poll of 1,250 youngsters aged 10 to 19 found:

  • 50% said parents turned a blind eye to their boozing.
  • Almost a quarter said drinking had landed them in trouble with police.
  • 52% buy booze from their local shop, off-licence or supermarket.

Closer Campaign

This week, Closer launches a campaign to tackle the problem. We want to see:

  • Police crackdowns and prosecutions on shopkeepers who sell alcohol to underage drinkers. There should be training for licensees and undercover investigations to catch offenders.
  • Health warnings on labels about the dangers of drinking too much and recommended daily allowances.
  • A ban on alcohol advertising aimed at youngsters.

Have you or your family been affected by teenage drinking? What do you want to see done to tackle it? Email your views to closer.letters@emap.com

RE: Closer campaigns against underage drinking

Yes fine the parents and enforce community service on the parents and also the youngsters. If they're busy doing hard labour they won't be getting drunk on street corners!

RE: Closer campaigns against underage drinking

I'm all for it! If there's anything I can do to help this campaign, let me know!

This is getting out of conmtrol - I'm glad someone's stood up and is willing to take a stand

That Katty sounds like a spoiled brat. It appears that some parents are trying to stop their children becoming out of control, but a lot of them just don't care, and people like that shouldn't be having children if they can't take responsibility for their upkeep. I had a rough upbringing myself, my parents divorced when I was eight and we kept the house - I never became out of control on alcohol. My drinking heavily when I was younger was because I was just a party animal. And I never used it as an excuse to hurt my parents

Katty, time to smell the coffee, love - your parents break up is NO excuse whatsoever for your childish behaviour. You need to grow up

And as for using condoms, that's better but you're too young for sex. You're not an adult, so stop doing things that are for adults. And regardless of your nbiave beliefs, you are damaging your body and there is not a sensible person on this planet who will disagree with me

The parents who don't care need punishment too, but so do the youngsters. Age is no excuse - I knew right from wrong by the age of four

RE: Closer campaigns against underage drinking

This girl needs to grow up and stop acting like a spoilt lttle witch. Blaming your parents break up is the most pathetic excuse for drinking i have heard. there are many families which are broken in these days, my family broke up years ago, and i would not have used it as an excuse to behave in such an ill manner. she is drinking because she thinks she looks "cool" and it fits in with her friends.
yes she may be using protection (so she says) but she is still too young to be having sex. by the sounds of it, she is letting anyone have her, and that disgusts me.
grow up little girl, you have so much to learn

RE: Closer campaigns against underage drinking

“I may be young, but I act older,” claims Katty, from Croydon. “My parents try to stop my wild behaviour but I just don’t give a s***. It’s my life and I’m going to live it the way I want – no one’s going to stop me.”

that's hilarious, her LIVERS gonna stop her!! haha, honestly if people are stupid enough to wanna drink themselves to death, then there better off not on this planet.
the reason kids drink is cuz they think their mint, it makes you embarrassing to everyone, you make stupid mistakes and kills your liver! bonus...
