Weight loss

Remote control your weight

Friday 22 February 2008

Doctors have revealed a new revolutionary procedure to lose weight – and it’s operated by remote control.

The latest development in weight-loss technology, the Easyband is similar to a conventional gastric band, but doctors can control it remotely with an electronic device.

The pioneering Easyband is designed to limit the amount of food eaten by adjusting the capacity of the stomach. A unique motor the size of a 10p piece is linked up to a remote control, which allows doctors to monitor the amount the stomach can hold.

To tighten the band, the doctor simply presses a button on the remote, sending an electronic signal to the motor. Ordinary bands can only be tightened by an injection of fluid to inflate the band, which can cause infection.

Caroline Paymayesh is a 48-year-old mum of two and the first woman in Britain to successfully lose weight with such a procedure. She's lost over nine stone with the device.

Caroline admits to eating over 40 chocolate bars a day, on top of her regular meals, and had ballooned to nearly 22 stone. A year later she has shrunk to a slim 12st 7lbs, after having the Easyband fitted.

Dr David Ashton, from the Healthier Weight Centre, who carried out the operation at the Alexandra Hospital in Manchester said: “It reduces the risk of infection compared to a conventional gastric band because adjustments are by remote control.”

He added: “Caroline is the first successful case in the country to have such a weight loss from this procedure. It is very exciting.”

It is hoped that the Easyband will be able to help others like Caroline who are dangerously overweight.
