Chloe Marshall Miss England

Is Chloe Marshall a good role model?

Friday 04 April 2008

Chloe Marshall has had a busy few months. The 17-year-old who was recently crowned Miss Surrey and will now go on to compete in the Miss England competition has stolen all the media attention from the national contest. The reason? Chloe is a size 16, weighing 12st 8lb at 5ft 10 inches.

The media in particular has praised Chloe for breaking the stereotype of a pageant queen and challenging conventions of beauty. But now nutritionists are starting to fight back, insisting Chloe is far from a good role model.

Monica Grenfell, a former Miss England judge and nutritionist, wrote a furious column in yesterday’s Daily Mail expressing her outrage that a 17-tear-old with an unhealthy BMI of 26.03 is being held up as a champion for bigger women.

Monica said: “As a dietician I am so worried about the damage her well-oiled publicity machine is doing that I think it’s vital to speak out.

In my view, Chloe is a terrible role model. I hope she doesn’t win the Miss England title. It would send an appalling –and very dangerous- message to other young women that it’s OK to be fat.

“Chloe is a start reminder that obesity is now virtually normal in our society- and we should all be hanging our heads in shame.”

This is a highly topical issue in a society that exalts celebrities with tiny frames, and yet has spiralling obesity rates. Clearly we need to encourage a positive body image amongst young women and teach them that Size Zero is unhealthy and unattractive, but is Monica right to argue that promoting someone larger in such a manner is equally as dangerous? Closer wants to know what you think!

RE: Is Chloe Marshall a good role model?

I think this monica needs to shutup! There are so many young girls out there beleiving they're fat, even when they are a size zero, living on half a slice of cucumber and a glass of water a day, its about time we had someone of a real size representing our sex and country! Chloe is far from fat - it's statements like that that drive girls to starving themselves in the first place! Maybe if everyone stopped concentrating on what other people look like, and focused on themselves we could on get on with life at the size we feel comfortable!

she's only *just* overweight she looks pretty normal to me (or is that the problem!?!) no-ones gonna look at her and think wow....screw the diet, i don't care about getting fat. theres a difference between a lil bit chubby and huuuuuuuuuge fattty.

I think she is a beautiful girl! Industry standards in the modeling arena are unrealistic. One of the best known model/actress was a "larger" size - Marilyn Monroe. Curves, confidence, brains....what's wrong with that? CHLOE - YOU GO GIRL!

RE: Is Chloe Marshall a good role model?

I think she is an excellent role model! Are nutritionists going to start saying that women who are so skinny you can see their bones sticking out are bad role models because they need to eat this thing called food. REAL food, not a glass of water and a crouton. We are not all a size 0-3 and that is why so many young women end up with eating disorders. Society is constantly saying if you don't look like you are starving then there is something wrong with you. I think she's a beautiful girl and if nothing else she has proven size is not an issue. If you are beautiful then you are beautiful and it doesn't matter if you are a size 6 or a ??????

RE: Is Chloe Marshall a good role model?

Sure, she's beautiful. But, anything in excess is not good for us. A body
with extra fat on it is not healthy. There has to be a balance and that is all that the industry is saying. I think she should strive to be fit and cut...not skinny and starving. There is a big difference. It isn't about looks, but about health and longevity. Sure, we are not a size 0, but does that make it right that we are all big?...quit making excuses and get in shape. Don't gross me out anymore. Honestly, nobody likes to look at fat people. You're just finding an excuse to stay lazy and not work to keep a standard.
And, I have all the right to say these things because I have recently gained 60 lbs.in the last 9 months and am now heavier than I have ever been. Its not fun and I'm not going to PRETEND that I'm confident.

RE: Is Chloe Marshall a good role model?

Monica Grenfel... I think you need a alot of petroleum jelly to remove that huge foot of yours out of your mouth. Lest you feel that the "0's" are not a good role model also. And were that true, why didn't you speak up long ago about their not being thus. You know what I think??? You are a retard, not truely a dietician, and definately not built with the ability of having the mental faculty for common sense. Yours truly and most graciously devoted to poking you in the eye one day,

William A Carpenter;
Chef, father of two lovely little girls and a bloody yank!!!

P.S. I'm givin you a proper "V" sign right now
