The Baby Weight Blitz

Thursday 10 April 2008

It’s hard to ignore the growing trend for shocking celebrity diets which carry severe health implications. Particularly worrying is the new obession amongst celeb mums to lose their baby weight, even if it means risking their health on extreme diet regimes.  J-Lo and Jordan are two such celebs who've caused a stir with their super-quick slimming.

The good news is that there are celebs out there who lose their baby weight the responsible way. Charlotte Church is rumored to be exercising hard and dieting sensibly to get back in shape for her summer holidays. Charlotte put on 4 stone while pregnant with baby Ruby, but clearly knows there is no safe short cut to dropping that amount of weight in a matter of weeks.

The Bad

And now a look at those naughty celebs going to extreme lengths to lose their baby weight

J-Lo, who is rumoured to have put on almost 4st while pregnant with twins Max and Emme, has shed a whopping 40lbs – losing 10lbs a week since giving birth in February.

A source said: “She spent the last month of her pregnancy planning her regime with a team of nutritionists and personal trainers. She calls them her 120lb team [8st 8lbs] in reference to her target weight.”
Jennifer Lopez
J-Lo’s been working out for three hours a day, seven days a week. The Latino diva does Pilates, then one-hour cardio workouts consisting of stationary cycling, running up 12 flights of stairs and boxing. She ends with an hour of weight training.

J-Lo has also slashed her calorie intake, eating just 1,400 calories a day, banning all
carbs. Instead, she eats high-protein steamed fish or skinless chicken, wrapped in leaves of kale or Swiss chard.

But nutritionist Juliette Kellow warned that Jennifer shouldn’t take her strict diet and exercise plan too far. She said: “Ten pounds a week is a huge amount to lose, and pregnancy puts a tremendous strain on the system. Jennifer’s body needs to recover. She shouldn’t cut out carbs,” added Juliette. “She needs the energy, and they’ll keep her digestive system healthy.”

Jordan
Within two weeks of giving birth, the 5ft 4inch model Jordan had dropped a stone. And after six weeks she’d lost an incredible two stone, dwindling to nine stone.

At the time, Jordan said she wanted to shed another 1⁄2 stone to reach her pre-baby weight of 81⁄2 stone, but pictures of her just a few months after giving birth suggested she’d lost even more than that.
Jordan

While Jordan claimed she just has “good genes" that help her lose weight quickly, she also admitted to regularly skipping meals and following a juice-based diet.
Nutritionist Donna McColgan told Closerdiets.com: "Such a dramatic weight loss is not a healthy way to lose weight at any time, especially after a pregnancy. As a new mum her iron and calcium levels will be low and she will be lacking in protein, calories, essential fats, vitamins and minerals."

She should be eating healthy balanced meals – with plenty of fruit and veg, carbohydrates, lean-meats and lots of low-fat dairy.”
