Yummy summer salads

Seasonal eating

Monday 28 April 2008

We are so used to having the most exotic foods and out-of-season produce waiting in abundance at our local supermarket that most of us have forgotten what it’s like to eat in sync with nature’s cycles.

But we could all benefit from eating ‘in season’ – not only is the food fresher and more nutritious, buying local produce also supports the economy and is better for the environment.

Out-of-season foods have been grown in special glasshouses and often traveled half-way round the world before ending up in your kitchen, which all adds up to the strains we put on the environment.

Local produce on the other hand is in harmony with the seasons. Vegetables like swede are in season in the winter and are perfect for warm comfort foods like stew while lots of fruit and lighter veggie varieties are around to cool you down in summer.

Meat and fish products are more wholesome if bought in season because the animals will have grown up on a natural diet.  Plus, buying British season produce helps our farmers, so what more encouragement do you need? Check out our seasonal food recipes here
