The Speed Racer premiere

Wednesday 30 April 2008

Last night I stepped out to the Speed Racer premiere in Leicester Square and despite the horrendous rain a nice little dose of stars trotted up the red carpet.

Susan Sarandon, who stars in the film, was an absolute pleasure to meet. I’ve thought she was great since the Thelma and Louise days! And in real life she’s really wise, intelligent and still looking hot for 61.

Anyway, we talked about the US primary elections and how she will vote. “I support Obama,” she beamed proudly: “I was initially Edwards and I was sad when he couldn’t continue. I think if we want change and someone who’s going to think outside the political machine then he’s the one. He’ll get the nomination and I honestly can’t imagine how anyone would vote for McCain anyway given the economy and the war.”

But would a strong woman like Susan not want a female President? “I would love for a woman to be President but not that woman (Hilary Clinton),” she said seriously. “I think the thing with feminism is that you are not judged by your gender. I think it’s bad that people might assume I’ll vote for a woman just because I’m a woman. It’s the same as a person of colour just voting for a person of colour. I hate Condoleezza Rice and I wasn’t a fan of Margaret Thatcher. I think those two are still women, right?”

I also spoke with teeny weeny actress Christina Ricci, who was sporting some beautiful Chopard diamond earrings, about music – she hilariously said she’s quit going to gigs because she can never see the stage! “It’s a serious problem,” she giggled.

Roseanne star John Goodman was also present at the premiere – what a mess he is. He was sweating profusely, had his shirt hanging out of his suit trousers and even walked back onto the red carpet saying he wanted a fag. A real shame…..

Other guests included Sir Ian McKellan, who told me he is just starting work on the new Hobbit feature film, and Guy Ritchie turned out with Lourdes and Rocco on his arm. He put his thumbs up and described Madge’s new album as “Great”. Well I guess he does kinda have to say that!
