Sunbathing

Why sunlight is good for you!

Tuesday 13 May 2008

Sun burn, heat stroke, skin cancer – there are so many scare stories about the dangerous effects of too much sun exposure around, it’s enough to spoil anyone’s summer.

And while Closer promotes sensible sunbathing and effective sun protection, here are a few reasons why a bit of UVB can do you the world of good.

According to a survey by The Spa Way, three out of ten women “took the day off work” (or phoned in sick) last monday to make the most of the sunshine we have been blessed with recently.

And who can blame them? Sunshine is as good for our tan as it is for our general well being! It provides us with vitamin D, which is essential for healthy bones and a strong immune system.

Recent studies also suggest that sunlight may reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, like cancer of the womb, ovaries, bladder and breast.

And if you need any more excuses to catch a few rays, sunlight is proven to lift the mood and even prevent depression.

Many people suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) throughout winter because the lack of sunlight causes our serotonin – also known as the happy hormone – levels to fall.

So get out there and don’t let anybody rain on your parade - but don’t forget the sun protection. See you on the beach!
