Charlotte Church and Gavin

Gav pops the question at last!

Monday 02 June 2008

Charlotte Church is celebrating after Gavin Henson finally asked her to marry him.

The happy couple are hosting a family dinner to make their engagement official – but they’ll have to wait a few weeks until the bespoke ring, made of Welsh Clogau gold, is ready.

The news has added to the speculation that a second baby is on the way for Charlotte, 22, and Gavin, 26, who became parents to Ruby last September.

A source close to the couple said Charlotte hasn’t stopped smiling since Gavin’s proposal. “Charlotte’s so excited that she’ll have a ring to show she’s properly engaged,” the source said. “She knows that a lot of people never thought they’d last as a couple, especially after all their public fights and the allegations last summer that Gav had snogged another girl.”

Charlotte has made no secret of her desire to marry her rugby player boyfriend. In an interview last April, she confessed: “If Gav got me an engagement ring, I’d definitely say yes.”

But the fact that Gavin has kept her waiting for over a year has caused rows between them. Our source said: “Charlotte was really disappointed that Gav didn’t pop the question when she fell pregnant.

“And after Ruby was born, Charlotte was hoping for a Christmas proposal. “It caused such a massive argument between them just before New Year’s Eve that they didn’t even go out together in Cardiff on the night. But then an hour before midnight, Gav sent her a text message asking her to marry him.

“She rushed to meet him and was thrilled to bits, but joked that he’d have to do better than a text. But then months went by and Charl was disappointed Gav hadn’t said anything more. She was starting to think she’d have to go out and buy her own ring!”

But what the TV presenter didn’t know was that, as Closer revealed two weeks ago, Gavin had enlisted the help of her gran to pick a ring. During a trip to a jewellery shop in Carmarthen, he ordered a special Welsh Clogau gold band that he designed himself. The rings tend to be inscribed in Welsh and are stamped with a Welsh dragon.

Gavin is refusing to say how much it cost, telling his mates: “This is a ring for life, so nothing is too expensive
for Charlotte.”

The source revealed: “Gav kept everything a secret from Charlotte. Last week, he surprised her by asking her to help him plant a special new tree, which he called their ‘tree for life.’ Then they did a special love ceremony where he finally proposed properly.

“Charlotte was really touched by the gesture, and is dying to get the ring so she can announce it. They may even get married as early as August.”
