Your diet influences the health of your hair

Eat your way to fabulous hair!

Friday 09 April 2010

We all dream of gorgeous, glossy hair but unfortunately most of us suffer more than the occasional bad hair day.

But even if you can’t afford to have your tresses coiffed and pampered on a weekly basis, shiny, bouncy locks can be yours – and it’s only one trip to Tesco away.

Your diet has as much of an impact on your hair as all the expensive hair care products you could possibly buy, so why not start your healthy-hair-plan at home?

Hair is made of protein, so it’s important to include foods in your diet that are rich in amino acids, like meat, fish and eggs.

Vitamin B is also crucial for a healthy head – you can find it aplenty in wholegrain cereal, brown rice, soybeans and peas.

To keep your scalp in good condition, nutritionists recommend foods that contain Omega 3 oils – try fish like salmon and mackerel or flaxseed.

Sulphur and Silicon are elements that will strengthen your hair from the inside out – broccoli and onions are good sources, but you can also find them in lettuce, cabbage and raspberries.

Eggs are the ultimate hair super food, being a good source of protein, vitamin B and sulphur – so if you’re feeling lazy simply fry up an omelette, chuck in some vegetables and you’re sorted.

But there are also some products that aren’t that great for boosting your barnet.  White wine, orange juice and dairy have all been linked to causing dandruff – because they trigger changes in the body’s sweat and oil secretion levels.

If you’re scalp is prone to flaking, you should avoid junk food and aim to make 50% of your diet raw fruit and veg. Again, flaxseed or fish oil are said to be beneficial.

So smarten up your diet Closer Online readers and you’ll soon be as beautiful and healthy on the outside as you are from within.
