Brook Bates Brook Bates before the surgery

'I had lipo, a tummy tuck & gastric band by 14'

Thursday 28 August 2008

Brooke bates became the youngest person in the world to have liposuction, aged 12. The procedure, two years ago, combined with a strict diet and exercise regime saw her weight drop from 16st to 10st in just three months.
But, unable to resist crisps and biscuits, within a year, 5ft 6 Brooke tipped the scales again at over 12st.

Terrified her daughter would become obese again, mum Cindy paid £3,500 for Brooke to have a gastric band fitted – even though she was only 13.

Thanks to the surgery in August 2007, Brooke, now 14, has lost 2st and is well on her way to her target weight of 8st. And Cindy is delighted for her youngest daughter – despite being criticised for encouraging her to go under the knife at such a young age.

“If people could see how much Brooke’s life has changed, they’d understand why I let her have the surgery. I regret not signing her up for a gastric band when she was nine. Other parents should do the same,” she tells Closer.

Stay-at-home mum Cindy, 41, first noticed Brooke had a weight problem when she was a toddler, saying: “She piled on weight quicker than my other kids, even though she didn’t seem to eat any more. In hindsight, I think she must have been eating in secret – she was 2st overweight by age eight.”

Brooke spent the next four years on diets, but after losing a few pounds, she’d always put the weight back on. “We went to so many doctors, but there was nothing medically wrong with her. They just advised restricting her food intake,” says Cindy.

Her parents feel they tried everything, including banning junk food. For a year, Cindy even went into school and sat next to Brooke during her lunch breaks to make sure she stuck to her diet.

But even this didn’t make a difference. Cindy concedes Brooke must have been getting extra food from somewhere, saying: “I think she got it from other children.”

Shockingly, by the age of 12, Brooke was a size 22, weighed 16st, and could barely walk. Doctors classed her as morbidly obese, and feared she’d develop diabetes. She was often left in tears after being bullied.

Brooke, from Austin, Texas, USA, recalls: “When I was 11, a girl asked me if I was pregnant. I just wanted to die.”
After seeing a TV documentary on weight loss in September 2005, Brooke begged Cindy and her dad Joey, 53, a landscaping firm boss, to let her have liposuction, in which a metal tube and pump is used to remove fat from the body.

Joey contacted Dr Robert Ersek, a renowned US plastic surgeon who, after meeting Brooke, agreed to help.
In March 2006, Brooke had 21⁄2st of fat sucked out from her back, thighs, stomach, arms and neck and became the youngest person ever to have lipo.

Brooke says of the £12,500 op, which her parents paid for with savings: “It was sore for the first two weeks. I had to wear a tight support device to help me get better quicker, but as soon as it came off I could see I’d shrunk all over.
I missed three weeks of school, but I lost 2st 7lbs of fat and the bullying stopped.”

But the liposuction did have one drawback – Brooke was left with sagging skin. Dr Ersek agreed to perform a tummy tuck and remove the excess skin from under her arms a few months later. In all, 10lbs of loose skin was removed.

“We weren’t worried about the ops,” says Cindy. “Our surgeon’s great.” By following a strict diet and working out on a trampoline, Brooke dropped to 10st within three months and swapped her size 22 dresses for size 14 swimwear.
Brooke says: “I’d never worn a bikini before, but after the lipo that’s all I went shopping for. I threw out all my old baggy tops. I had a huge scar on my tummy from the surgery, but I was proud of it – it reminded me of all I’d been through.”

When the op made world headlines, Cindy and Joe were accused of child abuse. However, Cindy defends the surgery, saying: “People said she was too young, but Brooke was morbidly obese. I feared she’d die.”

Cindy, who has a son Adam, 20, and daughter Bailey, 17, who are both healthy weights, says Brooke became far more outgoing after the ops. “She was a different person. So full of energy,” says Cindy.

But by the time Brooke turned 13, her weight had crept back up to 12st 2lbs. “I could see it was impossible for her to stick to her diet,” says Cindy. “She was still exercising, but she couldn’t resist crisps, ice cream and biscuits and told me she did eat in secret. I was scared she’d end up obese all over again.”

Brooke was disappointed too. “I felt hungry all the time. I was so unhappy again and felt I’d let my family down,” she says. Then, at the start of last year, Cindy’s friend had a gastric band fitted and she thought that might work for Brooke. Cindy says: “Our doctors wouldn’t do it as she wasn’t morbidly obese. But in Mexico they do it as a preventative measure and it was half the price at £3,500.”

Naively, Cindy says she didn’t have any concerns about the 45-minute procedure – going against doctors’ advice. The risks include blood clotting, infection, and damage to vital organs.

The procedure involves placing an adjustable band around the upper part of the stomach to reduce its capacity. It fills up faster, so you feel full quicker. Brooke loved the idea from the start, saying: “I was excited because I knew it would help me lose weight.”

In August 2007, Cindy went to Mexico with her daughter for the operation. Within 24 hours of having the procedure, Brooke was able to walk around.

Now, a year on, Brooke has lost 2st, but hopes to lose another 2st. She weighs 10st and eats a healthy diet that includes grilled chicken, fish and plenty of vegetables.

Cindy says: “ Now, I don’t have to worry Brooke will be dead by 25. I wish I’d known about gastric bands when she was younger.”

And Brooke couldn’t be happier. Looking to the future, she says: “Even if I don’t lose any more weight, I won’t put on any because I physically can’t eat more than a few mouthfuls and I don’t crave snacks. When I reach my target weight of 8st and have a boob job, I hope to make it as a model or actress.”

if you want all these things done, fine! just dont be selfish and use you oarents money. get a job and earn the money by yourself. on the otherhand you should learn to love your body and dont let yourself get over weight, do plenty of exercise and eat the right foods.

RE: 'I had lipo, a tummy tuck & gastric band by 14'

well rose-e u think u know it all eat 3 healthy meals a day hmm easy, exercise every minute u have free. for good sake thats not allways the answer i eat healthy i have a child so got no time for the gym. things r not always black and white. if her mum wanted to help her daughter well so b it, there`s nothing wrong wit that, anyway she may exercise everyday and it might not work for her so she had the op. if i had the money and my daughter had the same problems well i will help in anyway i can. that`s what her mother did, so give it up.

RE: 'I had lipo, a tummy tuck & gastric band by 14'

If her mother wanted to help her she should have taught her from an early age about eating properly. It's not like this girl has a medical condition that means she can't lose weight, this is all about pure greed! I'm sick of hearing about people moaning they can't lose weight when there are people out there who have worked incredibly hard and shed half their bodyweight without surgery! Part of growing up is learning that if you want something you have to work hard to achieve it, when all she's done is raid mummy's savings! real life isn;t that simple.

RE: 'I had lipo, a tummy tuck & gastric band by 14'

these stories always make me feel sick. there are too many girls in the press at the moment who are tasting fame for their inapropriate obsession with their looks. I understand the pressures a teen feels to look good, i'm young myslef, however, it is starting younder and younger girls. just look at Soya Keaveney featured in Closer or bbc 3's Sasha Bennington "beauty queen at 11" who has her mother bleach her roots blonde and takes her for fake nails and gives her fake tan. the girl herself is energetic and behaves like a girl of her age, however her pushy mother seems to want her to be a barbie doll rather than a daughter. i was shocked to hear her say her dad calls her a dumb blonde and the mother repeatedly saying "i'll make a mint from her" or forcing her to perform dance routines in public when the girl is clearly embaressed. Its the parents and not the children that make me sick.

Pink1976, i think you will find what you are talking about, with the 3meals a day and constant exercise is what is called "an eating disorder" it doesnt matter if you eat, there are obviously major control issues going on, other wise you wouldnt of felt the need to tell us your dress size, its girls like you that make Brooke think she needs to be thin!

How is eating three meals a day an eating disorder??? I think you'll find that is what they call a healthy balanced diet!!

RE: 'I had lipo, a tummy tuck & gastric band by 14'

No, the constant excersising after the 3meals a day suggests a control issue with food which is what eating disorders stem from!

RE: 'I had lipo, a tummy tuck & gastric band by 14'

its a case of pure greed, she couldnt resist crisps and junk food, she was/is a child. a child should be taught by the parents that all food is ok .. in MODERATION. its ok to have a packet of crisps, as long as its 1 packet and its part of your normal eating pattern. you shouldnt diet, just change your eating patterns for healthier choices.
exercise and healthey eating is the key. theres no quick fix, well there is, its called gastric bypass, and for this young girl to have it at such a young age is disturbing, shes been taught now that if your lazy theres the cheat option, the easy way out. think forward to 10 years when the now stretched skin after a tummy tuck, stretches when she has children. will she be able to eat a healthy diet whilst pregnant if it only allows such a small amount of food.

her parents should of taught her how to eat the 'right' foods, 'sin'foods as i call them are ok now and again, just learn how to say 'NO THANKS'

I almost felt sorry for her befor she said ''When I reach my target weight of 8st and have a boob job, I hope to make it as a model or actress.”
How pathetic....she's 14 years old !!! and she's already obbsessed with cosmetic surgery! I have no issues with ppl who go under the knife, infact i am friends with meny who have but im only 16 my self and would never think about having any thing done at my age....ur still a growing woman!
I think todays world is marketing skinny, underweight girls 2 much and is causing a huge problem for out younger generation !!
I still think that although she's been through alot it was pure laziness when she carried on eating ''crap'' after her op

CLARABELL I GOT TO SAY BY UR COMMENT IT`S NOT TRUE. I`M A VERY BIG GIRL I LIKE TO BE SMALLER SO I CAN FIT IN MY OLD CLOTHERS, BUT I`M LIVING WITH IT, I KNOW WHAT IT LIKE TO BE BIG I`VE BEEN BIGH ALL MY LIFE AND NOW I`M BIGGER, SO WHAT IF I WANT TO BE SMALLER I DON`T WANT TO BE A STICK THIN.I DON`T HAVE AN EATING PROBLEM SO IF YOU GOT A PROBLEM WIT ME, SAYING WHAT I FEEL GO A HEAD

I'm a size 14-16 and to loose weight I have to eat healthily and excersise 2-3 times a week. It really does my head in that people hav lipo-just do it the hard way like the rest of us! Its just cheating isnt it?! Plus no1 knows the long-term effects of plastic surgery yet so why the hell would u let ur daughter of 12 have this done?!!

rose-e posts telling us about exercise etc....pink responds saying shes big........clarabel ignores the fact that the person who posted the statement has their name 'above' the post not below..starts talking about eating disorders.and calls 'rose-e' by the name pink1976 by accident.....and now ur arguing........im gonna start reading these comment threads more often....the comedy writes itself

Pink1976 if you're only 16 you have the joys of weight gain to come when you get older. Wait until you go through heartache, a full time job, buying a house, having children, cooking for yourself and not eating what Mummy gives you and holding down a full time job, then try and tell people all they have to do is eat 3 healthy meals a day, not snack and excercise constantly!

Thankyou for writing such a great article on Brooke.
Brooke will be sixteen on August 31 and has done a great job at maintaining her weight. She weighed in at 148 today at Dr. Erseks Office. Brooke also got her Boob job. Thanks again Paul.

She is sixteen now and she already had a boob job, when she is still growing! And she wants to be an actress : ) he he he! She is pretty ugly and her body looks soft and really "used". She will never have a nice tight body because of HOW she lost the weight. How stupid!

RE: 'I had lipo, a tummy tuck & gastric band by 14'

Hi Brooke,

I completely understand how you feel because I had a similar situation when I was 13. I used to be obese (5'8.5", size 20) but I wanted to do en pointe for my ballet exams. My ballet teacher grasped every opportunity to expel me from her class because I looked awful. My schoolmates (and even teachers) called me names and passers-by all gave me unfriendly glares.

After being bitterly bullied and tortured, I knew I had to have a big change. I read many books about diet and tried out those diet tricks. I ate much less and tried to stay way from oily or sweet stuff. I also did ballet 3 hours a day, 5 times a week to make sure that I didn't look saggy.

I wanted to eat so badly all the time and had a strong craving for snacks during class. Yet, luckily though, I was able to resist all the temptations. I lost 26 lbs only in 2 weeks and my weight started to plunge even without much attention given. It only took me a few months to transform myself from a monster into a skinny bitch.

Now I'm size 6-8 (with D cup and they're all mine, not Dr. Plastic's, because I did a lot of upper limb exercise when I was growing) with around 118 lbs and a tiny waist. People call me Barbie Girl and I feel so great about it (But you don't have to lose that much weight - I'm asian and I've got smaller bones than you caucasians do).

All I want to say is that, if you want to have a slim body, the first thing you need is DETERMINATION. When you're determined to step forward, you can make it! =)

RE: 'I had lipo, a tummy tuck & gastric band by 14'

I turned 14 (in June) , and I have now lost 105 pounds (I began in Mid October of 2011) and finished at the beginning of July. I did it all by myself , no on else helped me. I did it by counting calories , exercise , and motivation. I was a size 22. I know what it's like to have excess skin , and I am having skin removal surgery hopefully in the next year or so. I just wish people wouldn't go straight to surgery to loose weight. That's one of the reasons I'd like to be a dietician , and help with prevent childhood obesity.
