Tom bought Katie's ring after their first date

Here we go again... Every time Closer thinks we can move on from the Cruises' somewhat sickly OTT declarations of their love for one another and appreciate them as just another Hollywood couple (with an incredibly cute daughter), Tom has to barge right in there and drop another one!

This time the vertically-challenged actor has said in an interview that he bought the engagement ring for wife Katie Holmes shortly after their first date. Hmm, was that before or after you jumped around on Oprah's sofa, Tom?

"I knew I wanted to marry Kate when I met her," he says in the Dec. 7 issue of T: The New York Times Style Magazine, adding that he "wouldn't want to disappoint her".

In case you're confused, the Scientology follower means he didn't want to disappoint Katie because she dreamed of marrying heartthrob Tom when she was a little girl.

And Katie, who appears on a split cover with her husband for the magazines "Holiday/Reinvention" issue, says she was "completely in love" after their first meeting.

"He was so warm, and I thought, 'Wow,'" gushes the actress. "I thought, 'You can be a superstar and a human being.'"

Bleurgh... from now on, Closer will only deal with lovely little Suri Cruise, who, luckily, can't talk yet!
