Want toned arms without the man muscle?

Monday 30 March 2009
Don’t fancy Madge and Trinny’s overly-masculine arms much?

You’re not alone!

Many people want to know the secret to toned arms without bulking up with a huge amount of muscle.

In light of which, Closer Online felt it necessary to compile some tips to creating feminine-yet-toned arms…

First off – we’d just like to point out – you should never worry about building Incredible Hulk muscles when you’re working to tone your arms.

Women don’t actually have enough testosterone to build humongous amounts of muscle (unless they are on special supplementation and/or a specially designed personal training routine devised to build that kind of muscle mass!)

Toning arms is really a two-part process:

1) You need to reduce the fat that sits on top of your muscles by burning more calories than you eat.

* Examine your diet and make sure you're creating a caloric deficit!

2) At the same time, you need to tone the muscle underneath the fat.

* The best strategy is to work your arm muscles from a variety of different angles.

Whatever strength exercises you choose, be sure to use heavy-enough weights that your muscles fatigue after eight to 12 repetitions.

Lifting weights that are too light is a waste of time. Lift enough weight so that by the end of each set, you can't do one more rep.

Do three sets of eight to 12 repetitions in total.

And if we’re looking at really complementing your toning workout?

Try out these sports-

Swimming - There’s nothing better for shaping your arms! Breaststroke, front crawl, butterfly, backstroke: each of the different strokes works your arms in different ways so you end up with an amazing overall result!

Racket sports - These work all the muscles in the arms. For gorgeous arms, give tennis, badminton or squash a go! Head down to your local sports centre to make use of their facilities.
Ball sports - Because they involve throwing and hand/ball contact, ball sports such as volleyball and basketball all contribute to developing your arms.
Cycling, running, walking, aerobics and dancing - You might not realise it (which is probably the best bit!) but these all give your arms a work-out!
