Kate: I'll beat Jordan in the marathon!

Thursday 02 April 2009

Kate Lawler is once again donning her running shoes to take part in the Flora London Marathon this month.

Joining a team of 1,500 Cancer Research UK runners, the sporty star tells Closer Online how she hopes to beat last year’s time of 4hrs 54mins, why she won’t be wearing pants this time round, and why she thinks she will cross the finish line before Jordan!

What made you decide to run the marathon again this year?

I wanted to run for Cancer Research UK as I was really pleased with how much I raised for cystic fibrosis in last years marathon. It also gives me an excuse to eat well and train lots.

How has your training for the marathon been going?
Much better than last year. I can be honest now and say last year I did not do one days training in preparation which was extremely silly but this year, my diet has improved and I’m training three times a week for it.

What has your training program consisted of?
I’m used to boxing but that’s stopped and I’m focusing on running a lot, and building strength by using weights to make my legs stronger. I train with a guy called Wayne at Fighting Fit in Birmingham, he’s really good and pushes me to my limits!

How does it differ from your regular fitness regime?

Like I said, I used to do lots of 20 minute runs and boxing and circuits but the running has increased and the boxing has stopped.

Have you sustained any injuries yet?

No injuries this year, last year my knees were really bad because I wasn’t training before hand but now I’ve strengthened the muscles around my knees and they feel fine when I’m running.

How do you spend your time in the gym?

As above, lots of weights, a special circuit devised by Wayne who also gave me a new diet specifically for marathon training and weight loss.

Do you take extra classes in martial arts/dance etc?

No but after the marathon I’m taking up kick boxing as I’ve never done it before and I’m really excited about it.

Do you use take any supplements to compliment your health and fitness regime?

Multivitamins, Vitamin B complex and Vitamin C as well as Zinc at night times.

Will you be running the marathon in your pants again this year!? What will you be sporting?

This year myself and Joey who ran in our underwear last year are running as Tarzan and Jane to try and raise more money although at the moment we’ve not raised a lot – so please sponsor us by going to www.runningsponsorme.org/katelawler

Jordan is also running the marathon this year – are you going to beat her?!
I hear Jordan has been training way more than me, doing longer runs, I’d like to think I’m still fitter and will beat her in the race but it wouldn’t surprise me if she beat me having trained as hard as she has…. I’ve not got any boobs to worry about though, they may get in the way of her run!

Have you been loading up on carbs? What’s your pre-marathon diet like in comparison to normal?

My diet at the moment consists of good carbs like rice, porridge and potatoes. My protein intake has really increased and I eat lots of eggs, tons of chicken, or drink a protein shake after I train to repair muscle and I’ve cut down on all bad foods avoiding bread, pasta and naughty things like chocolate, cakes and pasties which I love eating so it’s been extremely difficult!
