Obesity has been linked to cancer

Getting healthy trumps losing pounds

Thursday 25 June 2009

Studies have shown that a couple of extra pounds on your figure aren't as damaging as you might think. Tests have indicated that the lifestyle you lead will determine your lifespan, rather than your size.

While it's commonly assumed that a skinny frame is the key to health, researchers have found that people who follow a healthy diet and take regular exercise live longer than those who don't, regardless of their size and weight.

So a slim size 8 person who doesn't exercise might be able to fit into the tiniest pair of jeans, but won't have the health credentials of a size 16 who exercises regularly and eats healthily.

The study monitored the weight of 11,000 people over 12 years, and found that those who were underweight had a significantly lower life expectancy than their heavier counterparts.

Participants who were morbidly obese came up close behind in the risk scale, but those who were overweight and 'normal' weight lived roughly the same amount of time.

So next time you worry about muffin top or love handles, remember that it's the lifestyle that counts!
