Coffee

Freshen your breath with... coffee?

Friday 26 June 2009

A cup of coffee is the key to fight bad breath, according to latest research.

We usually associate coffee breath with the opposite (teacher breath, anyone?), but apparently the beans contain a chemical that counteracts the bacteria that causes halitosis.

The unusual finding came from a study at a Tel Aviv university, who, ironically, were looking to investigate how coffee caused bad breath.

Professor Mel Rosenberg, who also invented plaque-exposing Dentyl mouthwash range, concluded that it was probably the things that are added to coffee, such as sugar and milk, that cause 'coffee breath'.

He is now hoping to isolate the breath-freshening chemical for potential use in his mouthwashes.

In the meantime, a cup of coffee might ward off halitosis, but you will still have coffee breath. You can't win them all...
