The Lugger Hotel
Friday 29 May 2009
Like most people these days, before I go on holiday I like to spend a bit of time reading reviews of where I’ll be staying.
So, when I found out that my destination – the Lugger Hotel, in Portloe, Cornwall – was voted the best seaside hotel in the world, I had pretty high expectations!
Positioned on edge of Portloe harbour, the hotel is housed in a 17th-century smuggler's inn.
Boasting 22 gorgeous bedrooms, a scrumptious seafood restaurant with gorgeous views and an Elemis Spa – it’s easy to see why it’s receiving such amazing accolades.
We arrived on the Friday night and after checking into our sumptuous room – the beds are HUGE – we dined in the hotel restaurant, feasting on yummy monkfish, lobster, scallops and fresh strawberries.
After a day exploring the beautiful Cornish countryside on Saturday – and enjoying a traditional cream tea in nearby Trelissick – I enjoyed a tri-enzyme facial at the hotel’s in-house Elemis spa.
No ‘sounds of the sea’ CD needed in Portloe! I almost nodded off, hypnotised by the waves lapping against the harbour wall.
Breakfast at the hotel was just as delicious as dinner. As an often-disappointed vegetarian I nearly jumped for joy when I saw that the menu boasted a veggie fry-up, including my fave Quorn sausages!
All in all our stay was divine, and it was with heavy hearts we drove the windy road back to nearby Truro to catch the train home.
For more info on the hotel and to book visit www.luggerhotel.co.uk or call 01872 501322. I would highly recommend getting the train down to Portloe rather than flying – it’s such a scenic journey. To book tickets with First Great Western visit www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk
