Overcompensating on exercise? Not getting enough sleep? The top reasons you can't lose weight

Thursday 18 October 2012

You’re eating healthy and you’re exercising regularly – so why aren’t you losing those pesky pounds? Well, it could be for a number of reasons that would never have even crossed your mind. From not getting enough sleep to eating too little, here are the top reasons why you might that weight just won’t budge…

Diet

Overcompensating Exercise

By rewarding yourself with a treat after a long session at the gym, you may be countering the hard work you have put in and undoing the effects of the exercise. There is also a risk that you may be taking in more than you have burned off.

Bad Meal Timing

The times of your meals may be affecting how much weight you are losing. For some people it may be better to eat small meals and healthy snacks throughout the day, rather than eat 3 large meals a day and avoid snacking in between. Eating at night is also a bad idea, as you are unlikely to burn off the calories during sleep.

Lack of Sleep

Sleep deprivation can affect exercise performance and endurance, as well as slowing down your metabolism, increasing appetite and making you more likely to give in to your cravings. Lack of sleep can also affect stress levels contributing to weight gain.

Diet

You are inconsistent
If you are flitting from fad diet to fad diet or starving yourself and then bingeing it’s no surprise that you are not seeing any results. By playing havoc with your metabolism your body reacts by making more fat, it’s only protecting itself!

Vary your workouts

As well as becoming bored by your workout and so more likely to skip it, if your body becomes used to the same activity it will no longer feel the benefit of your workout because it has become so efficient at it. It may be a good idea for you to mix up your routine to ensure you get the full benefit of your exercising session.

Eating too much or too little

By eating a bigger portion than you’re supposed to you are increasing your intake of calories, some of us have increased our portion size so much we are actually eating 6 meals worth of food! And by eating too little we slow our metabolism and the body will store whatever fat you intake, making it harder to lose weight.

You may be impatient

Weight loss takes time; you will not see the results of your hard work in a week let alone a day! You need to be patient and keep up your routines in order to see the fruits of your labour
