Overweight women more likely to be fired?
Wednesday 19 November 2008
According to shocking new research, overweight women are more likely to be fired than their skinny colleagues.
Researchers found that overweight women suffer the most at their workplace, where they feel more discriminated against than their colleagues.
The study included over 41,000 adults who kept detailed diaries of a year in their lives, recording their weight, height and times of stress. The diaries show that those who were obese had more ‘stressful life events’.
In the course of a year, overweight women were more likely to be made redundant or face financial problems than their slim colleagues.
When the horizon is this bleak, it’s no wonder that, according to researchers, many overweight women comfort eat as a result of stress.
The fact that stress can cause obesity is well documented but this study reveals the other angle - obesity can also cause stress.
If you wonder how obesity and job performance are connected, the researchers explained that discrimination causes self-esteem issues and that many overweight women don’t stand up for themselves. This can mean they lose out on promotions or are first in line for redundancies.
Interestingly, the survey als o revealed that overweight women were less likely than skinny females to split with a long-term partner or to get a divorce.

RE: Overweight women more likely to be fired?
Hmm, not sure if I believe this or not. I worked with a lady who was over weight and she was far from a shrinking violet, in fact on the contrary, she was a bit of a bully! And as a result many "skinny" and indeed “overweight” women left the company to get away from her.
