SURFING THE UK!
Friday 27 June 2008
Closer has always entertained fantasies about spending the summer chasing waves on a surfboard, looking all tanned and sexy with our dishevelled, sun-kissed hair – not to mention all the hot surfers we would impress with our skills.
But somehow actually getting round to learning how to master the waves has always seemed a bit daunting… until this summer!
With a wave (sorry…) of surfing events hitting the UK left, right and centre there are opportunities aplenty to finally become a bona fide surf chick rather than just prancing around the beach in cute board shorts.
Surfing is, of course, a fun way of exercising your whole body too - all that paddling and trying to stand up on the board trains your muscles, balance and coordination – so get yourself down to one of these events and dip a toe in the water:
White Stuff Surf Relief Festival
25-26th July 2008
Organised by fashion label White Stuff, this is the Glastonbury of surf events. The festival hosts part of the UK Pro Surf Tour competition, so you will be able to watch professional surfers compete in five different divisions.
There will also be plenty of beach games, surfing and lifesaving competitions and family activities. In the afternoon the Sunset Sessions will kick off the live music festival on the sand.
And the best thing about it – apart from having fun in the sun (ever the optimist) you’re supporting a good cause too. Funds raised through the event will go to Surf Relief’s ‘Surfable’ project which provides subsidised surfing lessons for disabled and disadvantaged young people.

Rip Curl Girls Tour
28-29th June, 5-6th July 2008
Girls only, please! The Rip Curl Girls Tour is a young and fun project that encourages girls to get active and hit the waves with expert tuition from Rip Curl Pro Riders and professionally qualified instructors.
Girls of all ages are welcome to join the tour on one of the four UK beaches and get surfing!
This year’s tour is bigger and better than ever with a Brazilian theme to spice things up a bit : As if learning how to surf wasn’t exciting enough, there will be a beach BBQ, Capoeira sessions, a chill out zone offering yoga sessions and massages and Brazilian music.
The tour will be hitting beaches in North Devon, Dorset and South West Wales – for more information go to www.ripcurl.eu/girlstour_UK
