Get fit for a good cause

Wednesday 24 February 2010

’Tis the season to get fit readers, as there are sports events coming up for you to take part in to raise money for charity.

Get fit and help those less fortunate than you at the same time!

All you have to do is pick the good cause you want to support and get your trainers on!

London Dow Live Earth Run/Walk for Water

Don your trainers and start jogging or walking around the block to prepare for the Live Earth run/walk. This event takes place on the 18th April at London’s Victoria Park.

You’ll be in good company as celebrities including singer Corinne Bailey Rae and actress Kym Marsh will be running alongside you to raise money for countries that do not have access to clean water.

Corrie’s Kym urges you all to join her: “Currently a staggering 1 billion people don’t have access to clean water, something that we in the UK take for granted.

"So please help Pump Aid, a fantastic charity that gives water pumps to communities in Africa that have no access to clean water, by taking  part in The Dow Live Earth Run For Water 6km event on April 18th. Just £500 from every runner can give clean water to over 1 million people!! So come on London, help support Pump Aid and sign up to www.pumpaid.org – and get those running shoes on!”

The Manchester Midnight Walk

For the night owls amongst you, the Manchester Midnight Walk is back for the fourth year on July 2nd, raising money for St Ann’s Hospice which largely relies on donations. Participants will walk 10k from Manchester Central, Granada Studios, and experience the sights and sounds of the Northern city by night. One of the highlights of the walk is the Wall of Hope where walkers can choose to leave a message in memory of a loved one.

Last year, the event hosted a variety of entertainment including a warm up session with the legendary fitness guru Mr Motivator. Until Friday 26th March, it’ll only cost £12 to register and just £8 for those aged between 11 and 17. Go to www.manchestermidnightwalk.org.uk for more information.

Race For Life

No matter where you live in the country, there will be a Race For Life near you. The largest all-female fundraising race in the UK, it costs £12.99 to take part to cover administration fees.  The money you raise in sponsorship will go to Cancer Research to fund more than 4,500 researchers, doctors and nurses who all work to beat cancer.

So far, 4.7 million women have raised over £370 million. You go girls! Go to http://www.raceforlife.org/choose-your-event.aspx to enter a race.

Now that you know there are all these events to get training for, it’s time for you to say goodbye to the sofa and hello to a pair of running shoes!

RE: Get fit for a good cause

I took part in the Manchester Midnight Walk 2009 and had the best night. I had no preconceptions of what the night would involve but I was totally blown away by its scale. The entertainment before the walk was fantastic and Mr. Motivator was a real highlight. It was nice to see people paying their respects on the Wall of Hope which was also humbling to read and gave everyone a real motivation to complete the challenge ahead. On the walk itself there was a real sense of local people coming together for a great cause and the atmosphere alone was enough to carry you to the finish line.

I can't wait to the walk in July 2010!
