Acupuncture gave us our miracle baby
Tuesday 12 October 2010
When most people have trouble conceiving a baby they look into IVF or even adoption; but never acupuncture. Doesn’t that just help to relieve tension and stress?
For one woman from Wrexham, North Wales, the treatment was her miracle cure that gave her a healthy baby son.
Dawn Paddock had been trying for a baby for three years and was getting increasingly desperate. As a nurse in gynaecology, she had naturally relied on western medicine to help treat a blocked fallopian tube. However, with no sign of motherhood looming, the 31-year-old and her husband, Chris, were going to embark on a course of IVF treatment, when a friend suggested acupuncture.
Dawn reckons the three-hour session of the ancient Chinese practice helped her become pregnant with five-month-old, Shay: “It was the best £60 I have ever spent. I was sceptical. As a nurse you rely heavily on western medicine, rather then alternative cures.”
It is not just Dawn who credits acupuncture with helping her become a yummy mummy. Several celebrities have also praised the Chinese method including Celine Dion and Helena Bonham Carter.
Mike Cummings, of the British Medical Acupuncture Society, says the needle treatment can in fact help stimulate nerves around the ovaries and uterus to increase blood flow, helping you conceive naturally.
The new mum believes people are too cynical of alternative methods; “ People are doubtful about treatments they can not explain, but I think of the months we tried to conceive and nothing else worked.” Dawn and Chris hope to have more children and would definitely try acupuncture again.
“But, if I’m not lucky enough to get pregnant again, it won’t be the end of the world now we have Shay.”
