Car-jacker stopped woman being at dads death
Friday 26 November 2010
Thieves never know the devastating results of their crimes. As Sarah Jane Field pleaded with her car-jacker, he simply drove on past without looking back.
But the brave 45-year-old has gone to new lengths to let the thief know he stole her last moments with her Dad.
In an open letter to the carjacker, Sarah Jane tells how was on her way to her father’s care home - but the theft meant she couldn't see him that evening, or ever again.
Printed in the Metro this morning, the devastated daughter begins: ‘This is an open letter to the man who stole my car Wednesday.
‘I am a very private person but I am writing this to hopefully make you or someone else think twice next time.
‘As I was leaving work last Wednesday I pulled my car out of the car park and got out to close the barrier. You jumped out of my car and, although I begged you not to, you drove off. My car, handbag, purse, personal documents, sat nav and the few Christmas Presents in the boot can all be replaced.
‘What you can’t have known is that I was on my way to visit my Dad who was in a semi coma. By the time I got home after dealing with the police it was late. I rang Dad’s care home the following morning to be told that he had passed away the night before at 10pm.
‘You also took my phone which was in my bag on the passenger seat. Dad’s carers couldn’t contact me as that was the only number I had given them because I carry my phone at all times.
‘What you stole from me was my last goodbye to my Dad. My insurance doesn’t cover this. This also meant that my Dad passed away alone without any family with him. I have to live with this for the rest of my life and now you do, too.
‘I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas. As for me, it won’t be that great this year.’
Mrs Field’s car was taken as she left work in Walsgrave On Sowe, Coventry, and got to release a car park barrier. On returning to her Renault Megane, she found a hooded man in the driving seat – who, despite her begging, refused to let her back in and sped away.
By the time she had finished talking to the police it was too late to see her father, who had dementia and Parkinson’s disease. The next day she learned of his death.
We just hope that car thief reads that letter Sarah, because it sure made us think.

This has just made me cry. Heartbreaking. I really hope he read this letter, and he never has another day's peace. The sad thing is though, if he could do this to a woman in the first place he probably hasn't got a conscience anyway. pla. My heart really does go out to this woman. Your dad knew you loved him, I hope you will find peace one day. xx

The worst thing is, if he's ever caught, the bastard will probably just get community service - sickening.
