11-year-old wants leg cut off to become athlete
Friday 16 July 2010
Wheelchair-bound Danielle Bradshaw was born with congenital dislocation of her hips and right knee.
Having spent her life seeing her friends playing without her and wanting to be an athlete, 11-year-old Danielle has now decided to have her useless leg amputated in a bid to take part in the Paralympics.
She has been inspired by how much soldiers injured in the war and one-legged Dancing On Ice contestant Heather Mills have achieved, and said: "I saw them and it helped make my mind up. I am sick of all the operations. I jut want to be a normal kid. I see people running and I want to know how that feels."
She added that she was sick of "dragging" her useless limb around.
Although her parents were initially stunned, they are supporting Danielle's decision to have her leg removed. The brave 11-year-old will have her operation in August.
Her mum, Debbie Quigley, said: "When the wound heals she will be fitted with a prosthetic replacement. Friends are rallying round to raise money for a running blade and sports wheelchair."
What a brave girl Danielle is eh?
