Star beaten for dating someone not muslim

A 22-year-old woman fled from her home after her brother and father threatened to kill her, a court heard yesterday.

Afshan Azad, who has appeared in the Harry Potter films, was threatened and branded a prostitute by members of her own family after it was revealed that she was seeing a Hindu man. Her Muslim family were angered when they found out that Afshan was dating someone that wasn't a Muslim also.

The actress was so scared of her family that she escaped out of her bedroom window and later fled her home city. Police were later called and both her brother and father were arrested and charged with making threats to kill her. Her brother, Ahraf, was also charged with assault.

The young girl refused to testify against her family though, and failed to turn up to the court hearing. Prosecutors decided to accept a guilty plea to assault by her brother while both men were formally found not guilty of making threats to kill. Her father accepted to be bound over for £500 to keep the peace for 12 months.

Richard Vardon QC, prosecuting, said the actress was ‘the victim of an unpleasant assault by her brother’ at the family home in Longsight, Manchester, in May.

He added: ‘The reason for the assault, apparently her association with a Hindu man, that apparently being disapproved of by her family who are Muslim.’

It has been revealed that the father, Abul was awoken by his son shouting 'Sort out your daughter! She's a slag.'

He continued to further assault her, shouting, “Just kill her!”’

In a statement made by the actress, chillingly it read,

'My father began saying he would do it, a reference to kill her, as he did not want his sons to have her blood on their hands and he would do time for it. Then she began to feel very scared.’

Miss Azad called the police but after making her statement, made it clear she did not want to take further action

She later claimed that she found her fathers heavy accent hard to understand and retraced her statement and released another that read,

‘I dearly love my father and brother.

‘The proceedings have caused me no end of distress and if it goes ahead, it will make things much worse for me.’

Her brother pleaded guilty to one count of assault and will be sentenced in January.

He was bailed on condition he lives at the family home, does not contact his sister and does not travel to London.

the muslim faith is supposed to be very peaceful and loving, why do we hear so many of these types of stories and so called honour killings etc.
religion has a lot to answer of in my eyes its the root of all evil!

It isn't the religion that is the problem - it is the ignorant, erroneous interpretation of it by bigots that causes all the problems and sadly this brings the entire faith into disrepute....

i know what your saying linda and i know this will cause a whole row to begin but how often do you see christian families killing each other over so called honour? or christian extremists and terrorists. i am just generally curious over why it is the islamic faith that creatures these extremists that ruin a lovely peaceful faith's reputation.

Even when they know someone is going to kill they still do nothing
to put a stop to it,&they what to turn this country all Islamic !!

The overall theme of any religion is suppose to be love and peace, yet all we see is violence, God loves US unconditionally and we should do the same, no other human being should force THEIR views on another. If their own reputation an honour means more to them than God and their family, then I truly pity them as they have been tainted by satan.
The key to life is love.

Thats just very Wrong in many ways especially as there related and its rude that she can only go out with muslims its up too her who she goes out with its her life and up to her who she loves i think her family are very selfish intervering people and should be proud that there daughter is in such a big named high popularity film xx

Whilst you're all right is some aspect, you're wrong in others!! Nearly all religions have their fair share of skeletons in the closet! Their history is far from clean when it comes to oppressing other humans!
Religion is just the excuse and and the human being uses it to justify their already tainted and violent nature.
I would love to say it's one thing, but we know that the act of the human is the same no matter what religion they support and I am gladly a person not tied to any religion, as they are too controlling and restrictive!!

The fact is these two men were prepared to disguss killing their daughter/sister in cold blood. Can you imagine how she must have felt hearing that, the two men in the whole world who should be there protecting her, it's chilling.
For whatever reason these so call honour killings happen, it's disgusting and vile, and any so called peaceful religion that condones this is as well.

never mind religion....where is the justice, the courts need to send the message loud and clear that any woman in this country has the right to be safe!!! they are many more woman in similar situations, what message is our justice system sending out to them when something as serious as threats to kill are not properly dealt with!

Unfortunately our justice system would lock up an old lady for not paying her council tax than stamp out such attacks! I saw the police escort a neighbour to the police station because she had a warrant out for her arrest for not paying coucil tax! And they still don't clear up the rubbish in the streets.
I think that when the system is so backwards that someone robbing a bank gets more than someone commiting murder. A shame that the guys (yes plural!) were allowed to get away with an attack that is not welcome in 21st century Britain!!

You will be quested by God for even killing an Ant or A FLY! it is a HUGE SIN! to KILL ANYTHING! OR ANYONE! murdering is WRONG on so many levels, also Islam teaches to RESPECT your women! as they do so much for us. HOW DARE they do such thing, its VILE and they are not Muslims!
