'I have sex with my brother'

Rachael Carter always dreamed of setting up home with the love of her life, but at first her family were horrified by her choice of partner – her brother.

When Rachael, 35, met half-brother Sean Harper over eight years ago, the pair were shocked to find they were attracted to each other. But rather than fight their feelings, they decided to embark on an incestuous relationship.

Legally banned from officially marrying, the couple have even had a makeshift wedding ceremony. And although they’re not planning to have children, they’d love a “happy accident,” despite the potential health risks.

“Our relationship is amazing,” says Rachael. “No two people could love each other more.”

Sean adds: “I did question what kind of person I was to fall in love with my sister. I also worried what our friends and family would think. But I told myself I wasn’t hurting anybody, and love is hard to find.”

Their story began when Rachael’s mum Samantha, now 61, was pregnant with Rachael and discovered her husband Jim was having an affair and expecting another child with a local woman called Marie. She threw him out and he moved in with Marie, 57, a few miles away.

Samantha gave birth to Rachael in July 1972, and Marie had Sean just 28 days later – but the children didn’t know of one another’s existence until more than a decade later.

Rachael says: “When I was 12, Mum told me about Sean and his brother, James. I couldn’t believe I had two half-brothers, but I was too young to find them.”

Then, in 2000, Samantha and Marie bumped into each other. Discovering that neither of them had stayed in contact with Jim – Marie had left him 20 years earlier – they exchanged numbers in case Marie’s children wanted to get in touch with Rachael and her younger brother, Tony.

“When Mum said she had a phone number for my brothers, I was really excited. I called Sean because he was the same age as me,” says Rachael, then 27. “I asked: ‘Do you know who this is?’ He said: ‘Are you my sister?’”

The next night, Rachael drove to Sean’s house, 20 minutes away from her home in America’s Midwest, to see him and his girlfriend, Karen.

Rachael says: “Sean was gorgeous – I couldn’t stop staring at him. I thought it was just excitement, but as the night went on I realised I fancied him. We spent the evening comparing our hands, fingers, ears, eyes – everything.

“We also talked about our dad, although we didn’t really know him. I’d only met him a few times when I was a child, and Sean hadn’t seen him since he was 23.”

The couple agreed to meet the next night and the chemistry was still there. Ten days later, they kissed.

“I didn’t see her as my sister, and we didn’t need to talk to know we both wanted it,” explains Sean, a construction worker. “We carried on kissing for so long that a policeman banged on the window of our car. I was scared as I thought he would somehow know we were brother and sister. That’s the first time I considered that what we were doing was wrong.”

Two days later, Rachael invited Sean to her house to watch a film. “When it finished, I led Sean up to my bedroom and we made love. It felt so natural,” says Rachael, who owns a cleaning business.

The next day, the couple talked about their feelings. “I told Sean I was worried that I was falling in love with him,” says Rachael. “He said he felt the same way. We knew our family wouldn’t understand, so we resolved not to tell them.”

Sean broke up with Karen and started to have sex with Rachael on a regular basis.

“We got on so well – better than I had with anyone else I’d ever met,” says Sean. Two weeks later, they moved in together.

“We told our friends the truth, and because we hadn’t been brought up together, they accepted it,” says Rachael. “But we didn’t tell our families. We just said that we wanted to make up for lost time.”

But after five months, Tony became suspicious and asked if they were sleeping together. When Rachael said they were, he told the rest of the family.

Rachael says: “My mum invited both families for dinner and when everyone was together, she asked me what was going on. I told her and she flew into a rage. She kept crying and asking us why we’d done this.

“Sean’s mum was furious, too. They didn’t understand how we could fall in love.”

Rachael and Sean spent the next 10 months trying to sort things out, and eventually agreed to a trial separation.

Although neither of them moved out, they started dating other people. “It didn’t work, though,” says Rachael. “Within a month, we got back together.

“It’s been a long and tough time, but both of our mums accept it now. They’ve realised we’re in it for the long haul.”
In December 2005, the couple exchanged rings in a commitment ceremony. “Sean came home one day and produced some gold wedding bands,” says Rachael. “He said: ‘Let’s make things official.’

“We invited our friends and declared how much we loved each other. We didn’t invite our family because we weren’t sure how they’d feel, although now they are quite accepting.”

The couple have decided not to have children as it could lead to a conviction for incest, but Rachael says she would keep the baby if she were to fall pregnant. She says: “We would love any child that came along. I don’t worry that it would have deformities – you can’t spend your life thinking: ‘What if?’”

And although their sexual relationship is illegal, the couple are defiant that they’ll never be convicted. Rachael says: “If someone said I was having sex with my brother, I’d say: ‘Prove it.’ We’re just a brother and sister who live together.”
