'I've got 13 kids and I'm pregnant again'

Tuesday 31 May 2011

As every parent knows, life can be hard enough with one child to look after – but Sara Foss loves motherhood so much, she’s pregnant with her 14th! Real Life

Remarkably, she refuses to rule out having more children, and insists she’ll only stop when it becomes “medically impossible” to have any more – even though she hates being pregnant.

“It’s awful,” says Sara, 39, who’s due to give birth in April. “I suffer severe morning sickness. However, I love the feeling of giving birth and holding each child for the first time. Kids are my life.”

Sara and partner Stephen, 40, receive £33K a year in benefits, despite the fact that Stephen has a job and they live in a council house.

“Yes, we get family tax credit and child allowance, but so do many families,” says Sara.

“We could claim more, because two of our children have Asperger’s syndrome, but we don’t. We have children because we want them – not to fleece the state.”

Sara met canal boat builder Stephen 15 years ago, when she was a single mum to her eldest son Patrick, now 21. Real Life

Sara and Stephen set up home together, but at the age of eight, Patrick decided to stay with his grandparents.

Sara, who has never worked, explains: “Patrick wanted to stay at his grandma’s because he was settled at school.
He visited us every day.”

Incredibly, Sara insists that having children wasn’t at the top of their agenda, and the couple lived together for two years before she fell pregnant.

“We weren’t trying for a baby, but we weren’t using contraception either,” she admits. Their son Stephen
was born in June 1996.

“I fell pregnant by accident again a few months later,” says Sara. “I loved being a mum so much, I didn’t want to stop.”

Their second son, Malachai, named after a character in horror film Children Of The Corn, was born a year later.

In December 1998, the couple welcomed their first daughter, Peppermint.

“I craved peppermints all through my pregnancy, so the name came from there,” Sara explains.

Peppermint was followed by brother Echo in November 1999. Eli was born in June 2000, and in January 2001 sister Rogue, named after a character in X-Men, arrived.

Film buff Sara says: “Movies inspire lots of our children’s names. They make them individuals. I don’t think it’s cruel and I don’t worry they’ll get bullied.”

The couple’s biggest baby, Frodo – named after a hobbit in Lord Of The Rings – followed in November 2002, weighing a massive 13lbs.

“That one hurt!” recalls Sara. “But I still gave birth naturally.”

Sara’s baby plans were put in jeopardy when, 36 weeks pregnant with her ninth child, she was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Doctors induced her so that they could remove the tumour, which was benign.

“I was certain I’d survive,” says Sara. “There’s no way I could leave my children.”

Her seventh son Morpheus, named after a character in The Matrix, was born in June 2004, followed in May 2005 by Artemis, named after Artemis Fowl, the popular kids’ book.

In July 2006, the couple, who admit that they don’t have a social life but do manage a healthy sex life, had third daughter Blackbird.

Fourth girl Baudelaire, named after a character in Lemony Snicket’s series of children’s novels, A Series Of Unfortunate Events, was born in 2007, and baby number 13 followed in January this year, weighing a sizeable 10lbs.

The couple chose the name Voorhees for their new son, after serial killer Jason Voorhees in the horror movie Friday The 13th.

“His full name is Vorhees Halloween,” says Sara. “Some people are shocked by the kids’ names, but they all suit them and they love being called something different!”

Stephen only objected when Sara wanted to name daughter Baudelaire “Sinn Fein” – the name of the Irish political party associated with the IRA.

“I thought it sounded pretty, but Stephen put his foot down,” Sara explains.

The family claim to live comfortably in their three-bedroom council house in Derby. Five boys sleep in one room, the four girls in the other. The remaining three youngsters sleep in their parents’ bedroom.

“People who visit our home can’t believe we have one child, let alone 13,” laughs Sara, who gets up between 4.30am and 5am to start her chores.

“It’s not cramped because the rooms are big, and the children love sharing. And I try my best to keep our home immaculate.

“Sometimes, I do up to 11 loads of washing a day – we have to buy a new washing machine almost every year.
We don’t have a dishwasher, so I do all the dishes.”

The family receives family tax credit of £527 per week, plus a total of £507 in family allowance every month.

They spend £400 a week on groceries, including 32 loaves of bread, 126 pints of soya milk, 36 rolls of toilet paper, three boxes of washing powder and eight boxes of cereal.

Sara and Stephen, both strict vegetarians, are raising their kids meat-free. Sara cooks all the family meals from scratch, using fresh produce.

“The kids love veggie curry, chilli and pancakes,” says 6ft, size 10 Sara.

Stephen helps out by doing the school run and the weekly family shop, which fills three supermarket trolleys.

Sara says she hates the stigma attached to large families.

“People think we doss on the dole, live in a slum watching TV all day and let the kids run riot and eat what they like, just so that we can claim as much as we can. It couldn’t be further from the truth,” she says. Real Life

The couple fork out £2,000 a year for school uniforms, and Sara says she’s proud of the children’s good manners.

“We’ve raised them to respect other people. And they only get pocket money if they help round the house,” she says.

Sara insists their family and friends have been supportive of their choice to have such a huge family.

“The only time I’ve ever been criticised was by a stranger in a hair salon, who said I must be mad,” she says. “It upset me, but I know people find it hard to understand.”

The couple are now looking forward to baby number 14.

“I think a child is the greatest gift of all,” says Sara. “How can people criticise me for wanting something so wonderful?”

Sounds like a decent family to me - they are actually parenting - which cant be said for a LOT of 'families' out there

RE: 'I've got 13 kids and I'm pregnant again'

That is a lot of children (not sure about the names) but you can tell how happy she is and I agree with above sounds like a very decent family.. I don't think they'd find many babysitters if they fancied an evening out though !! haha
Good luck with baby 14..

RE: 'I've got 13 kids and I'm pregnant again'

Had a quick giggle at the names but overall they seem a decent family and manners seem to be enforced which can only be a good thing! Good luck with baby number 14, maybe they could call it Closer???

RE: 'I've got 13 kids and I'm pregnant again'

They seem alright as people and good enough parents, but if they have to accept £33k a year to be able to raise that amount of children should they really be having so many?

Ok
#1 has this women never heard of protection!
#2 giving her childrens names from films is a disgrace especially the horror ones PLUS thinking of calling her daughter Sinn Fein (do they know how many people that man has murdered!)
#3 Even though they are together its even worse for them to sponge off the council-
FUCKS SAKE PEOPLE why do we allow this to happen and laugh! its a disgrace!

RE: 'I've got 13 kids and I'm pregnant again'

"slinkysponge" This woman obviously loves kids and looks after them and brings them up well..
She has 2 with disabilitys of which she could claim benefits for but doesn't as she knows she can cope, I'd understand if they all sat at home doing nothing but the dad works for a living and she brings them up with mannors and fresh ingredients dinners !!
Fair play to her doing all of this and still being sane that's what I say

(I agree the names are silly!!)

Look for article "Too fat to work" THAT is a disgrace !!!

The world is too full of people what would happen if we all had 13 plus kids. As a tax payer I'm giving money to his family on the many benefits the family are getting.

RE: 'I've got 13 kids and I'm pregnant again'

im not surprised she wants to stay at home all day making babies whilst getting paid 33,000 a year in benefits SOME OF US DONT HAVE THAT OPTION
the thing that concerns me is the ridiculous names that she has called her children , its dreadful and if her children do get teased or singled out she has only herself to blame

RE: 'I've got 13 kids and I'm pregnant again'

1, I also am a bit dubious about the choice of names.... the kids may say they are happy now but might be less thankfull as they get older....

2, Are tax breaks and childrens allowance not the right of every family in the country??? As in your personal tax breaks are calculated on the basis of your marital staus and how many children you have or have not? And is childrens' allowance not paybale to every mother in the country, regardless of their earnings? Am asking as this is how it is in Ireland and we based our system on the English system... if this is the case, you could hardly call these people benefit spongers....

3, They seem to be playing things fairly and are raising their children well, and have created a happy family environment for their children.... the father works, thus instilling a work ethic in his children, and is also hands on with the family, the mother gets up at 4.30 am, and keeps house and family well... good role models; that does not seem to be a long list of negatives to me....

RE: 'I've got 13 kids and I'm pregnant again'

4, FAO SILKYSPONGE: Sinn Fein is the name of a political party, not a man, and it (as a political party) has NOT been directly responsible for any murders, although has been the political mouthpiece for the PROVISIONAL IRA, (70s and 80s) and has its History in the OLD IRA (1930s, see film MIchael Collins or your local history book!!!). (Sinn Fein should not be confused with the REAL IRA or other break away political activists using the name IRA, those who have ignored the peace proccess, or at the very least attempted to). Sinn Fein was chosen as the name for a political party due to its meaning. It is the Irish language for WE, OURSELVES. Symbolic considering what they stand/stood for. Not really appropriate for a child's name though..... :)

5, Raising children is not easy, in many ways, not least financially. I have one of my own and two stepchildren, I work two jobs and study. My partner works also. We claim the benefits, what little there is, that we are entitled to. I have a friend who is expecting her 8th child. Our children (3) make more noise and mess than theirs (7) when we go on days out. Not that ours are rude or misbehave, just they are less calm. The family has a very organised system, which we dont need quite as much, with only 3 to consider. Having seen the workings of a large family over the last few years I have realised that there are very few people who could handle it so perhaps we should consider the hard work involved if doing it right, as this woman seesm to be doing, before criticising......????? Also having seen the workings of a large family I have to say that personally I wouldnt stay at home making babies all day even if the benefits we excess of 100K!!! I know I do not have the patience or the energy.

RE: 'I've got 13 kids and I'm pregnant again'

The thing that bugs me about this story is the fact that we are constantly being told that the world is too over populated and we don't have enough resources already and then there are people like this having 14 children!!
For example how much water and energy is used in her 11 loads of washing a day - a disgrace when some parts of the world don't even have clean water to drink. I totally agree with David Attenborough that people should consider only have 2 children per family - being from a family that only had one other sibling I can definately say that I didn't miss out on anything!

RE: 'I've got 13 kids and I'm pregnant again'

I think it's great that Sara is clearly doing her best for these children, home cooked meals, good manners & a clean house. I don't have a problem with families getting help when they help themselve. Stephen works full time, so I don't have a problem with them getting "top ups" from the state. I do feel however that children need love & attention & with the best will in the world, it's impossible to give enough attention to 13 kids, while doing 11 loads of washing......

Her body must be destroyed after 13 pregnancies & those names are crazy & a bit cruel !!

RE: 'I've got 13 kids and I'm pregnant again'

Clearly this woman is another british citizen who loves to pop out as many kids as you can in order to gain free money off the government to live off! Try getting a damn job and providing for your own kids and not rely on other DECENT hard working people to have money taken off them in taxes in order to pay towards your kids.

Women like this make me sick! The British governement need to realise that benefits are a total waste of tax payers money and we need to abolish the system entirely!!

RE: 'I've got 13 kids and I'm pregnant again'

BlueEyedGirl - for goodness' sake , read all the other comments will you? These people are not "scroungers" - they are just taking the benefits they are entitled to. My parents received child allowance and tax credits when I was younger, despite the fact that they both work. It's also clear that they don't "live off" the benefits as you have said - 32,000 pounds a year couldn't possible cover everything you need for 14 children AND the father works.

Are you seriously saying that you wouldn't take the money you're entitled to and be happy that someone was helping you if you had a child? If so, I take back everything i've said. You're clearly a Saint.

RE: 'I've got 13 kids and I'm pregnant again'

Tell me this: why do we need the benefit sysyem when countries like America and Australia manage just fine without it?
The benefits system was only brought into the UK around the 90s? My parents managed just fine without it to bring up both me and my brother.....even when my dad got made redundent for around a year, my family were still able to survive on her wages. The benefit system has brought this country into disgrace....take a look at council estates!! There is not one council estate that i don't know of that isn't full of young chavs with their own kids, drug dealers and basically unfit parents. What sort of environment is that to bring up a child?

And Blondeau....YES i would be happy to not except the governement's free money to bring up a child of my own! As i believe in working hard to have a decent job with a decent wage BEFORE having kids so i can bring up my children with money that i have worked hard to earn myself instead of scrounging off the government like alot of young teens with kids tend to be doing now as they think its easier to have a kid and gain free money instead of finding themselves a job to provide for their own children!!

RE: 'I've got 13 kids and I'm pregnant again'

Well said 'blue eyed girl'!!
This woman had a choice to have that many children and with that she should pay for the consequences NOT tax payers!! If you cant afford to have that many kids DONT sponge off the system!!

RE: 'I've got 13 kids and I'm pregnant again'

This annoys me soo much!.. that tax payers have to pay for people who want to have 13 or more kids its sick! theres no need for it and what I dont like is when you have that many kids the older ones end up getting dumped with the younger ones,I live next to a family and they have 8 kids and its a nightmare they all look after each other but they get very jelious and its not a good way to be brought up like that and have to look after all your younger siblings its not fair.

RE: 'I've got 13 kids and I'm pregnant again'

Most of you obviously don't have kids. This woman is only claiming what she is entitled to. She is not on benefits!! There is a difference between benefits and tax credits! Her husband is working so he is also a taxpayer. BlueEyedGirl, your saying you would be happy to accept the governments free money. When you have a child are you going to reject Statutory Maternity Pay while on Maternity Leave or child Allowance. Most work places only offer 6 weeks Maternity Pay, when you have a child are you going to go back to work when your baby is 6 weeks old because you won't want SMP from the government??? Every family who has a child is entitled to child allowance up until their child is 16 no matter how much they earn. Does this mean every parent is a benefit scrounger??? What is wrong with being a stay at home mum while your husband is out working and claiming what your entitled to. I work but if i could afford to i would let my husband work and i would stay at home to look after my daughter. If i didn't accept the tax credits i'm entitled to I wouldn't be able to pay for childcare and therefore would not be able to work. Me and my husband both pay taxes so doesn't that mean we pay for our own tax credits?? Just like this woman's husband pays his taxes.

To the people who think you should only have two children per family, no one has the right to tell anyone how many children they can have! And people who do have big families shouldn't be made to feel bad by people who obviously don't have don't have kids and don't understand that every family is entitled to Child allowance for each child under 16, no matter how rich or poor they are!

If there were two parents both working but were not being paid enough to take them over the limit to claim tax credits and received the same amount of tax credits and child allowance for each child as this family does, would they be benefit scroungers???

RE: 'I've got 13 kids and I'm pregnant again'

you speak from a sensible and objective view with very good points raised my issue isn't the amount of children she created but the fact that she does receive an awful lot of benefits which is funded by the tax payer- child taxes are benefit money and any money that she claiming frm the government is benefits
yes her husband works but so do a lot of other fathers the size of their family has nothing to do with it-if she was making an income from home or earning some money of some sort i would have a lot more respect for her because it implys she is not just another lazy women depending on her partner to bring hm the goods just so that she can stay at hm and make babies
there is nothing wrong with being a mother because that is a full-time job but where is her identity away from that where is her ambition

You should be proud, and who is to say you cant have that many kids or the family's to big, its your family and if your happy and loving and caring to your family then theirs no problem Good luck with baby Number 14 xxx

yummymummy- maybe not a good idea following Chinas rule completely – their orphanages are PACKED with children which most of China s taxes go to support. A lot of these children are disabled as parents don’t want their only child to be that way!
Read the whole fact before shouting your mouth off about following a non democratic country that doesn’t even allow you to express your feelings verbally!
Also typing in capitals doesn’t make your comment more important just kinda looks childish!

RE: 'I've got 13 kids and I'm pregnant again'

I personally think that after reading this she is bringing up her children really well and I don't think she should be criticized for getting child tax credits and child benefit. All of us mothers (I only have 1 child) are entitled to that so why shouldn't she? Even though i think the names are a bit bizarre I cant really comment as my son Chester is named after a character from The Goonies!!

Omg some of u ppl need to get lives. i am sick of hearing people slagging of w.omen who want to have more than children. at the end of the day god gve us the gift and ability to have children and why should we not take advantage of that if we want to especially when there are thousands of women out there cant have any children! the tax credits system was put in place to benefit larger families and those on lower incomes. these people are NOT benefit spongers as the husband works. and why should she have to work she wants to be able to give her children as mush love and attention as possible and good for her as there are many women who have kids and are happy to fire them into nurseries with strangers everyday!!!!!!!

Whilst I admit that the couple is in many ways a decent family, I do however, fail to see that Sara Foss is "entitled" to her 'non-benefits' as she has NEVER worked in her life.

Surely her husband works and I would ber happy to admit that they would be entitled to claim child credits for like i.e. 2 - 3 kids but how some come to the conclusion that she is "entitled "to receive £33.000 a year, which equals to a DOUBLE working salary after taxes paid!?

And her obsession to name her kids stupid names like Sinn Fein clearly indicates that this mum is truly not an sane individual.

Im on the fence about this one, at reading the title I was instantly thinking 'O hear we go another benefit scronger,' but the family do seem lovely. I don't think its her & her family thats screwed its the system.
If they can afford a huge family then fair enough but why should I have to fork out of my measly £16k a year I work for so that she can double my income. Jus because I choose not to have children, why am I punished? And how many others are there like this in the country, I see a different family every week. Bugs me.
