'I weighed 715lbs, but I've lost 215!'

Tuesday 26 January 2010

Sitting in her doctor’s office, Ruby Gettinger already knew her life was in danger. Weighing 715lbs (51 stone) at her heaviest, it was only a matter of time before that wake-up call came.

“The doctor said, ‘Ruby, you’re going to die. I’m telling you right now you are a walking time bomb about to explode”, Ruby, whose weight gain had led to diabetes and an enlarged heart, recalls.

Ruby left the doctor’s office at rock bottom; faced with the option of a 500-pound-plus weight loss mission or an early death, it was an ultimatum she would have preferred not to face.

“There was a part of me that thought: ‘Maybe it's meant for me to die. I can't beat this; I'm never going to beat this. Maybe I've finally done my purpose,’” she says.

“It took me three weeks to finally say, ‘Okay, I'm going to do something.’”

And ‘something’ turned out to be a total lifestyle overhaul, as Ruby analysed her daily diet, surprised to see an unlikely pattern emerging in her eating habits.

“I never ate a proper meal!” she says. “I’d just snack all day long on corn chips and pop tarts.

“And, being a Southern girl, I loved my Southern fried comfort food,” she adds, citing her upbringing in Savannah, Georgia, as a further contributor to her weight gain.

Comfort eating, it turned out, would be the biggest obstacle for Ruby to overcome. “Originally I thought [comfort eating] was similar to drug addiction, but I found out that the two problems were exactly the same," Ruby says.

"I was always happy before, but when I went to see a therapist I was crying after 3 minutes. I didn't realise how deeply-rooted these problems were until then."

Tackling the emotional reasons behind her eating inspired Ruby's journey initially, but she was also able to address her food choices with the help of nutritionists and health professionals.

"Basically, I'm eating everything that I didn't have before!" she says. "I have a cup of oatmeal or toast with sun-dried tomatoes for breakfast, and maybe pork chops or grilled fish later on."

And while it means that she no longer enjoys her Southern comfort food, or her favourite meal, spaghetti ("I miss it bad!" she laughs), Ruby's positive lifestyle changes have resulted in see-it-to-believe-it results.

Ruby has lost over 215 pounds (15 stone) thanks to her weight-loss plan, which includes 20 minutes of exercise twice a day, and is still losing the weight.

She has also famously refused weight-loss surgery, too; while her weight qualified her for a life-changing operation, Ruby was adamant that she wouldn't take any shortcuts in her journey.

"I'm fine with people wanting to do that, but I need to learn how to do this, or I'll never beat it. I decided to be the 'guinea pig' to see if it is possible to be 700 pounds and lose all the weight you want and still look normal.

"I want to find out why we are overweight and what actually works", she concludes. "But I will get plastic surgery after I lose the weight to get rid of the excess skin."

Today, Ruby has used her weight loss as a means of inspiring other people to pursue healthy lifestyles of their own, with a television show, book and website to support her cause.

'Perhaps by sharing my personal weight-loss journey on television, I can help others confront the truth and lies about obesity. And if I can do it, then I know anyone can conquer 'the beast'!" Ruby says.

The show has since gone on to become her network's highest-rated show, with a UK following gathering speed. Something about Ruby's no-nonsense approach to weight loss and candid confessionals has had people hooked.

"People would come up to me in tears because they've been making changes in their own lives after seeing the show," Ruby says.

"They said that I was keeping them going - to be honest they help me keep going! It makes me so happy to see people seeking the help they need."

Ruby's show airs on The Style Network (Sky Channel 253) at 10pm on Tuesdays - check out her amazing journey on the box!

January 2010 Update: Currently filming the second series of her TV show, Ruby now weighs in at just over 350 pounds, meaning she's lost an amazing 365 pounds (26 stone)!

How nice it is to see someone who is inspiring others to lose weight the healthy way. No crash diets, surgery or pills. As someone who struggles with weight it is wonderful to see a beautiful woman working towards a new future, best of luck to her x

RE: 'I weighed 715lbs, but I've lost 215!'

I cant stand people like this! Why should we feel proud for someone who has selfishly porked her way through life and now suddly sees sence after being told she could die. You have to be seriously messed up to get to that level of weight! DISGRACE!

RE: 'I weighed 715lbs, but I've lost 215!'

I agree, as a society we tend to feel sorry for over weight people, they can do what they like to their bodies its their life but when they claim on the NHS to have a lift changing operation they really annoys me, I admit I like to over indulge and maybe eat things when I shouldn't however if these people act like this well they are no better than the council estate scum that claim thousands of the goverment

I do not care that you stuffed food in your face. You caused it to yourself. It's not like you had a baby!

RE: 'I weighed 715lbs, but I've lost 215!'

She over indulged & she's making positive changes ! To say she's not entitled to help because she "selfishly porked her way through life" is unfair. There could be lots of reasons why she over ate & ended up the way she did. I lost my Dad as a teenage & over ate as a way of comforting myself, I don't consider that "selfishly porked her way through life" & just the record the NHS spends billions on people with smoking, alcohol & drug related illness everyday, why should someone with a weight issue be any different.

RE: 'I weighed 715lbs, but I've lost 215!'

Why are some people so horrible? I am sure Ruby is aware that she has done this herself but she is doing something about it. We have too many young girls who starve themselves to look slim maybe people should start looking up to people like Ruby who are taking possitive steps to improve there lives

RE: 'I weighed 715lbs, but I've lost 215!'

im sorry she has such a lovely enticing face but why on earth do people not think of the consequences of course if you eat the wrong food every day your going to be obese
when you see t yourself ballooning and YOU CARRY ON EATING unfortunately the blame lies with you ,why?? cos she didnt do anything a doctor told her too-she was comfort eating herself too death, i really applaud her now for finding the courage to take the next step but she has to take some blame
a skinny role model is just as bad as a obese model, there is nothing wrong with being big but you have to know there is a limit to size just as there is to anything to else

RE: 'I weighed 715lbs, but I've lost 215!'

Exactly my point 'usual1' you have just said it yourself being morbodly obese take time out of the NHS like smokers and alchohlics. There must have been a time in this womens life where she would have turned round and went fuck im fat i need to do something about this! But she selfishly continued! People like this are selfish and should not be idolised!

RE: 'I weighed 715lbs, but I've lost 215!'

Hey slinkysponge

I was trying to make the point that she should be as entitled to help as other people who abuse their bodies in one way or another. I agree that there was a chance she could have prevented things from escalating and I don't agree with her lifestyle choices, I just think it's harsh that people are so rude. Ruby is making positive changes which are over looked because or what she did previously.

Support, consideration & compassion don't cost anything !

RE: 'I weighed 715lbs, but I've lost 215!'

Im not being rude its just I get fed up of people like this. The woman has got paid to be in this article she should realise not everyone will be supportive of this. Shes the mkind of woman that would eat 20 macdonalds burgers and then sue them for getting her fat!

RE: 'I weighed 715lbs, but I've lost 215!'

Dont give people like this publicity for something that she should be doing anyway. She is a burden on society, the NHS, and us mugs have to pay for selfish people like her. So fed up with these people who gain weight to loose it, only to put it back on and feel they have to give us a running commentary each time. SO WHAT! JUST GET ON WITH IT You still have another 20 odd stone to go so dont brag about it!

RE: 'I weighed 715lbs, but I've lost 215!'

i agree , why should we have to pay our taxes for this, i do support her choice but she needs a good dietician nutriionit and counselling to get to the bottom of why she was over-eating

RE: 'I weighed 715lbs, but I've lost 215!'

I love the way it's OK to get that big because she used food as a "comfort" if her comfort was molesting small dogs or kicking grannies it wouldn't be OK.

RE: 'I weighed 715lbs, but I've lost 215!'

Ruby was 715lbs (51 stone) at her heaviest in the 90s, but has been whittling her weight down since a startling wakeup call from her doctor about the state of her health.

I'm sure it wasn't all that startling. Honestly how thick is this woman? being that fat IS a death sentence FACT.

RE: 'I weighed 715lbs, but I've lost 215!'

It's startling that you would call her selfish and thick. How do you know what she is or how she feels? Ofcourse she knew she was fat.
Have you ever felt that feeling of hopelessness where you can not find the heart to stop eating even if you want to, and then to get to such a collasal weight and decide to fight it at all costs. What a brave woman.

When you all come face to face with YOUR lifes challenges I hope you are met with the same support!!

Ruby - don't let these narrow minded, cowardly bigots get you down.
xx

RE: 'I weighed 715lbs, but I've lost 215!'

I don't really think she is a person you could class as 'selfish'...she could have taken up hospital beds, funding and equipment to take away the problems she caused...but she didn't and she should be applauded for that.

Sometimes it takes a professional to tell a person that they're in danger of dying because of their own actions, I mean it's not like they're going to want to admit it to themselves is it??

Just the fact that she's taken it upon herself to lose weight through healthy eating, exercise etc the way that everyone else should at least attempt is something to be SO proud of!

She should be described as an 'inspiration' rather than a 'selfish' person....I'm pretty sure everyone uses the system in various different ways at some point in their lives to get what they want.
Nobody's perfect but she's doing her best :)

An inspiration!! really! OMG i thought your comment on the child who does beauty pagents was very growen up of you Sarah X but this is ridiculous! I know were not all perfect but eating yourself to death IS selfish as it doesnt just effect her it effects everyone around her!

RE: 'I weighed 715lbs, but I've lost 215!'

i agree eating yourself to exsessive amounts is greed and greed can equate to having selfish needs
she is doing something about it now but why applaud she shouldnt be there in the first place-she waited till she looked in the mirror one day and realised what A MAMMOUTH SIZE she is
still..she is doing something about it now -i hope she sees sence when in a similar situation to stop before it gets too late

RE: 'I weighed 715lbs, but I've lost 215!'

I didn’t realise how many nasty people are in the world till I read this article it is nasty people like your self’s that don’t help the issue of this addition. I’m sorry but eating is not “shellfish” is like any addiction it is a vice that some of us get trapped in it is an emotional disorder, metal disorder and a physical disorder. It is not the fact that we don’t know what we are doing it is the fact that we can not stop it; can a shelf harmer stop cutting them shelf’s no can an alcoholic stop drinking no, it takes a very strong person to stop this cycle. We should be helping and supporting and encouraging people that are trying to do this, I’m very proud of your achievement and so should you be. DONT let any one drag you down.
